Pledge to Help Restore Native Food Systems
Our once healthy, strong and self-sufficient Native American communities have, for decades, been paying a too-steep price for colonialism, assimilation and forced dependency, especially when it comes to their traditional diets, agriculture and food systems - their very well-being.
The toll has included a diabetes rate averaging more than two times that of other Americans, plus epidemic levels of heart disease and obesity. It has also led to a significant weakening of their cultural traditions in many cases, as well as badly stunting their economic livelihoods.
Pledge to help First Nations Development Institute as it works to help Native nations renew, reinvigorate and re-establish control over their Native food systems.
I'm taking the pledge to support Native food systems as a way to improve health and nutrition, food security, cultural connections and their very economic development, which can lead to once again strong, sustainable and self-sufficient Native communities in the U.S.
