The peace agreement between north and south Sudan is on the brink of collapse. If that happens, any realistic prospect for peace in Sudan as a whole, including the Darfur region, would be shattered.
In south Sudan, 2 million displaced people have returned to the homes and villages they fled during a devastating 21-year civil war. Yet they are facing poor access to water, food, medical care and education. Their dreams of peace and stability have been dashed by extreme poverty, new sparks of tribal conflict, and fears of renewed conflict with the north. And few people around the world are taking notice.
The Sudanese people want to return home, they want to support themselves and they want to rebuild their lives. But to do this, they need stability, and they need international attention.
The U.S. must support the north-south peace agreement while encouraging a peaceful solution for Darfur. President Obama should develop a broader strategy that resolves the root causes of conflict throughout the region.
