Keep Bike Share Stations on the Perimeter of the French Quarter!

The French Quarter Citizens, French Quarter Business Association French Quarter Management District, Rampart Main Street Association, and Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents, and Associates have joined forces to oppose the City of New Orleans' bike sharing program in the historic French Quarter neighborhood.

Our concerns include:

- Erosion of the historic integrity and authenticity of French Quarter

- Bike share stations in French Quarter streets usurp parking spaces and will result in the loss of thousands of feet of needed residential and business delivery freight parking zones

- Bike share stations have billboard advertising which is inappropriate for the French Quarter and against the Vieux Carré Commission standards (a historical preservation committee mandated by the Louisiana State Constitution, the City Charter, the City Code and the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance)

- If bike share stations become full, these bikes can be docked and locked to private and public property with locks that cannot be legally removed (i.e. wrought iron fences, balcony posts, etc.

- There is currently no recourse for damage to private property by bike share bikes

- Competes with existing French Quarter bike rental companies

- Bike-share bikes will be dumped in the French Quarter during big events

- No enforcement and citation mechanism for violations

- Bike share billboards will be graffiti and vandalism targets

- Program operated by 3rd party company with 10-15 employees, which is an inadequate number of personnel to redistribute bikes out of the French Quarter during events (i.e. festivals, sporting events, etc.)

Currently French Quarter residents and employees have access to only two public bike corals. We propose that the City install public bike corals in the interior of the French Quarter to benefit the current local French Quarter biking community, while limiting the installation of bike share stations to the perimeter of the French Quarter.
