Danger Signs for Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste

Last November in a report on the potential for radiation leaks at Yucca Mountain, the Technical Review Board told the Department of Energy that the heat from the expected 77,000 tons of decaying radioactive waste and spent fuel would accelerate corrosion of metal waste containers DoE has designed for use at the site. DoE currently stands by the design, which is supposed to contain radioactivity for 10,000 years, but has not produced data proving its effectiveness.

Write to President Bush and tell him that you want real answers about Yucca Mountain and a real solution to nuclear waste. Ask him to phase out nuclear power plants.
Dear President Bush,

Protecting the American public should be top priority for any administration. The U.S. Department of Energy has yet to formally respond to a November 2003 report about the potential for radiation leaks at Yucca Mountain, the proposed national nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The Technical Review Board told the Department of Energy that the heat from the expected 77,000 tons of decaying radioactive waste and spent fuel would accelerate corrosion of metal waste containers DoE has designed for use at the site. DoE currently stands by the design, which is supposed to contain radioactivity for 10,000 years, but has not produced data proving its effectiveness.

If the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, an agency’s with the sole purpose of providing “scientific and technical oversight of the U.S. program for management and disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel from civilian nuclear power plants” does not have faith in the storage mechanisms provide by DoE, how is the American public supposed to feel safe with these containers in their backyards.

Please respond to the report on radiation leaks, and come up with a real solution to nuclear waste. Stop endangering the American public, and phase out nuclear power plants.
