The 4,303 public charter schools educating 1.2 million students comprise 3 percent of all public schools in the United States, but they are often short-changed on public funding. Nationally, they receive only 78 percent of what a school district receives per pupil.
Public charter schools have unique traits that increase the likelihood of a successful education for a child, which is why it's important that your state's government adequately funds public charter schools. Charter schools have increased flexibility to adapt to the educational needs of individual children, make timely decisions about developing curriculum, structure the school day and hire teachers who meet the needs of their students.
And best of all, they work. Public charter schools graduate more students with better GPAs for the same amount of money as other public schools, and they graduate students at a rate higher than the state average.
Tell your governor: Support adequate funding for public charter schools!

It is time to start viewing charter school as the opportunity to take public education to a new level. Public charter schools offer different approaches for families that for many different reasons feel a need to be separate from their local public schools. Choice, it's that simple. Thank you for your consideration. Sue Franzen

My grandchildren are going to charter schools and the education they are receiving is incredible. They are learning extremely great studying habits as well as a great knowledge to take with them into high school and beyond.

My children were never happier than when they were in charter schools. They even liked uniforms for the fact that they put everyone on equal footing and they always knew what to wear. Easy with no competition. Teachers, parents, and students were much more actively involved with the educational process. And the clincher is that they actually had a love of learning then. Public school has been a disappointment for two parents that cannot active homeschool like we would like. Since being reintroduced to public school self confidence, individual accountability, and bad habits are trending in at amazing speed.

We need to invest in the future of our children. We need them to realize that they have a voice and do make a difference. Lets do all we can to make sure they get the education they deserve.

Our school systems need all the help they can get, and many parents would be very happy to have the choice of sending their child to a charter school.

I am looking forward to sending my 8 year old to a charter school next school year. I can't wait. Finally there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The public school experience turns my stomach. He is not fully benefiting from his experience and if anything, his three years in public school have been HELL. Unfortunately we live in a rural area and charter schools are not plentiful, however, I strongly believe that I have found the right one that will get him off to a proper start since public school did not.

In "my' families case.... The option "we" have is 1. Get killed, beat-up, or shot at a public school or #2. Sent them to Chater schools. Which one would YOU choose?? Charter school are the ONLY thing the GOOD Cleveland, Ohio kids have. Ya know...remember the GOOD kids and the kids that WANT to learn? They are the ones that need the charter schools!!!!!!!!!!!!!

INSTEAD, WHY NOT STOP NEW ONES FROM OPENING AND KEEP WHAT REMAINS. HOW IS IT COST EFFECTIVE TO SURGE THE CHARTER/HOMESCHOOOL COMMUNITY INTO THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS? GUESS YOU'LL HAVE TO BUILD NEW SCHOOLS IN THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND PAY MORE SALARIES TO GET MORE TEACHERS AND PAY THEM MORE, WHEN THEIR UNIONS ULTIMATELY STRIKE. BEYOND THAT, FEED MORE KIDS, PAY FOR MORE VOUCHERS, MORE BOOKS MORE EVERYTHING, IN GENERAL. HOW IS THAT "OVERCROWDED CLASSROOMS" IS A PROBLEM AND THE SOLUTION IS TO PUT MORE KIDS INTO THEM? FURTHERMORE, I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HIT THE TOPICS OF THE CIRRICULUM, THAT IS TAUGHT IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AS FAR AS THIS "NEW EVERYDAY MATH" GOES. CHARTER SCHOOLS SEEMS TO BE THE LAST STANCE ON CHILDREN HAVING MATH SKILLS, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY STILL FIND VALUE TO THE CONCISE METHODS, WHILE THE UBLIC SCHOOLS ARE GETTING DUMBED DOWN MATH, THAT DERIVES FROM INNERCITY PROJECTS FOR LAST HOPE TO TRUE, SOLID BASED LEARNING; TURNING THE PUBLIC SYSTEM INTO AN ASSEMBLY LINE OF DUMBED DOWN CHILDREN, ONLY FOR THE GOOD OF THE "NUMBER" TO PASS TESTS TO RECIEVE FUNDING. ILLUDING THE PUBLIC THAT THEY ARE TEACHING, WHEN THEY ARE TEACHING HALF TRUTH. NOT ONLY ARE THEY HAS IT TURNED CHILDREN INTO MENTAL GUINEA PIGS TO A "NOTION" OR "FAD" BUT IT IS A DETRIMENT TO MATHMATICAL TECHNIQUE WHEN THEY GET TO ALGEBRA. NO WONDER PEOPLE HAVE TO HAVE A BACHELORS DEGREE TO WORK AT A RETAIL JOB, BC WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE, THESE CHILDREN CAN'T EVEN COUNT CHANGE. THEY ARE TAUGHT WITH ROUNDED MATH AND CALCULATORS, BC THE TEACHERS AREN'T GIVEN THE TIME TO GIVE REMEDIALS TO CHILDREN THAT WER PASSED THROUGH WITHOUT KNOWING THEIR MULTIPLICATION TABLES. THIS EVERYDAY MATH IS A PLACATION TO LEARNING, WHEREAS CHARTER SCHOOLS USE SAXON MATH AND CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT CONCISELY. PUT SIMPLY: NOBODY CARES MORE ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL CHILD MORE THAN THEIR PARENT. THUS, WHY WE HAVE TURNED TO CHARTER SCHOOLS TO ENSURE THE PROGRESS AND SUCCESS OF THIER POTENTIAL LEARNING. DO SOME COMPARITIVE RESEARCH TO FIGURE OUT THE COMARITIVES ON WHY PARENTS CHARTER SCHOOL THEIR CHILDREN. LOOK AT THE RESEARCH ON WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS FAR AS THIS SO CALLED "EVERYDAY MATH" IS CONCERNED. LOOK AT HOW STATES LIKE TEXAS, MARYLAND, ECT ARE DROPING IT OFF THE FACE OF THEIR MAP BC IT IS DESTROYING THE STRUCTURE OF THE CHILDRENS CONCEPTS OF LEARNING. THERE ARE MANY REASONS IN WHY PEOPLE USE CHARTER SCHOOLS, SOME CHILDREN HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS, SOME CHILDREN ARE ABUSED BY OTHER CHILDREN, SOME CHILDREN ARE GIFED AND THE SCHOOLS DON'T PROVIDE WHAT THEY NEED TO EXCEL. SOME FAMILIES HAVE RELIGIOUS CONVICTIONS AGAINST THE SEXUAL EDUCATION THAT IS BEING TAUGHT, SOME FAMILIES ARE IN PLAIN CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN, SOME FAMILIES LIVE IN AREAS WHERE THE SCHOOLS ARE TERRIBLE, SUCH AS INNER CITIES OR LIVE IN OUT OF REACH AREAS. AND WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN YOU DO WITH THE CHILDREN THAT GO BEYOND THAT AND HAVE GOTTEN EXPELLED FROM SCHOOL, DON'T THEY RESORT TO CHARTER SCHOOLING? I THINK SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK ABIT BEYOND THE NUMBERS AND LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. HOW CAN DESTROYING CHARTER SCHOOLS EFFECT YOU ON A BIGGER SCALE?
SOUNDS LIKE SOME MORE SPENDING 20 DOLLARS TO MAKE A NICKEL THINKING, TO ME. I THINK IT WOULD CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW POLITICIANS TALK SO MUCH ABOUT "THE CHILDREN" WHEN IT REALLY IS ABOUT THE DOLLAR AND GOVT FUNDING AND QUOTAS. IF YOU STOP CHARTER SCHOOLS THEN YOU HAVE BASICALLY TOLD THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN THAT COMMUNITY THAT YOU CARE NOT ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN, AND THEIR POTENTIAL GOOD OR THEIR POTENTIAL WORST.
I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT THEY WANT THE PUBLIC SCHOOLYEAR TO BE LONGER.....HOW DOES THAT AFFECT THE TAXPAYER AND YOUR GOVT BANK ACCOUNT.....WHEN YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR EXTRA UTILITY, EXTRA ON CHILDCARE VOUCHERS, STRIP THE OHIO RESIDENT OF MORE MONEY WHEN THEY HAVE TO PAY FOR MORE CHILDCARE AND MESS UP VACATION SOTS BY TAKING A MONTH OUT OF THEIR SUMMER REVENUE, BC THE KIDS ARE STILL STUCK IN SCHOOL FOR AN EXTRA MONTH ECT......HASN'T OHIO GONE DOWN THE TOILET ENOUGH, ALREADY?

Dear Governor Perdue,
As a parent of a child who attends Summit Charter School in Cashiers,NC, I am urging you to provide more funding to NC charter schools. Before Summit was built in 1997, many young people with school-age children moved away from our community because of the lack of educational opportunities for their children. The traditional public school serving Cashiers, Blue Ridge School, was not a viable alternative for families who truly valued education. In 1997, Summit opened its doors to over 170 students in grades K-8. It continues to thrive today with even more students in attendance. It has earned the NC School of Excellence Award, and deserves all of the help that traditional public schools receive. After all, NC public schools should give every public school student the opportunity to do well as they are our citizens of tomorrow. Please help them be the best they can be for the betterment of everyone in NC.

We need these schools to give a chance to the children who need more attention than it is possible to give you in regular schools.
My grandson has done extremely well in a charter school.
