Take Action to Protect Jumbo Wild!

For over a decade, Phedias Project Management has been pushing the development of a four-season glacier ski resort in the heart of south-eastern British Columbia’s undeveloped wildlands. The creation of this resort over 55 kilometres into the backcountry will compromise some of B.C.’s most significant grizzly bear habitat, and will saddle provincial and local taxpayers with exorbitant costs associated with infrastructure development, and the provision of off-site services such as waste management and fire protection.
Dear Mr. Glassman,

I am writing to register my opposition to the Jumbo Glacier Resort (JGR) proposal, and to urge you to reject it immediately. I am sure you are aware that the Environmental Assessment Office has already registered over 6000 statements of opposition to this resort. To date, over a decade of opposition from local government, citizens, businesses and First Nations has been ignored.

Approval of a permanent development in the Jumbo Valley could have serious impacts on existing businesses in the region. Further, it will negatively affect the provincial business climate by undermining the stability of existing tenures, and will destroy opportunity for public enjoyment of “Super Natural British Columbia” – our greatest provincial economic asset. The Jumbo resort would add very little to the local economy, but demand massive public investments in infrastructure, road building and maintenance.

I urge you to invest provincial tax dollars in existing B.C. mountain communities such as Revelstoke, Golden, and Invermere that desperately need economic diversification and support in the transition from resource extraction to professional and tourism services. Diluting the tourism pool by building a resort “from scratch” 50 kilometres from the nearest town will do nothing to help communities thrive into the future.

The Jumbo Glacier Resort is proposed on 5,500 hectares of undeveloped wild land adjacent to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy. In its current state Jumbo is ecologically viable and very valuable. It is habitat for one of B.C.’s most significant grizzly bear populations, and for other threatened species such as wolverine and mountain goats. JGR will also add huge amounts of effluent to the aquatic ecosystem of Toby Creek, where algal blooms downstream of Panorama Resort (at only 2500 beds) are already becoming a persistent problem.

In 1995, through the CORE Regional Land Use planning process, Jumbo was stated as a nationally significant recreation site and was recognized as a candidate area for protection. This proposed resort would undoubtedly degrade the wilderness recreation opportunities that currently exist in the Jumbo region.

Like thousands of others who oppose the Jumbo Glacier Resort, I believe that the economic, social, and environmental costs of the project far outweigh the benefits.

I am urging you to reject the resort proposal for Jumbo immediately.

Thank you for accepting my comments.

Sincerely,
