Support the SAFE Act and End The Barbaric Horsemeat Trade

Each year, more than 100,000 horses are shipped out of the United States – to either Canada or Mexico – where they are barbarically butchered to feed the demand for horsemeat around the world.

The horsemeat trade is notoriously cruel to the animals and dangerous for humans. Just last year, the EU banned horsemeat from Mexico over safety concerns. Mexico easily thwarted the ban by simply shipping the meat to Vietnam where it was relabelled and sent on to the EU market.

In the U.S, slaughtering horses for meat has only been banned in a few states, but has never been officially prohibited nationwide. Now, to make matters worse, the Trump administration's proposed budget would remove the restrictions on inspectors in U.S slaughterhouses and end the rules that prevented new horse slaughterhouses from opening.

Regardless of whether horses are slaughtered in the U.S. or shipped abroad, this practice must stop.

Now more than ever, we must ensure Congress passes the 2017 SAFE Act, which would officially stop the killing of horses for human consumption in the U.S. and block their export to other countries for that same purpose. According to polling, more than 80% of Americans object to killing horses for human consumption.

208 representatives have already cosponsored the SAFE Act. Now, we need the remaining legislators to join them in supporting the bill.

Tell U.S Representatives who have not yet supported the 2017 SAFE Act to sign on as cosponsors and help end the slaughter of horses for meat.
