Growing plants and trees on top of a landfill could reduce the production and release of harmful gases such as methane and carbon dioxide.
This process, known as "phytocapping," is the subject of a recent study by Australian scientists that will be published in the International Journal of Environmental Technology and Management.
By putting a layer of topsoil over the landfill and growing vegetation, the soil and plants capture surface methane emissions four to five times more than a landfill without plants.
On its own, nature can do amazing things. We need to begin trusting nature and stop abusing it.
