Support a Bush vs Kerry Debate on Environment

Target: Bush–Cheney Campaign 2004
Sponsored by: League of Conservation Voters
WE DEMAND A DEBATE ON THE ENVIRONMENT!
Americans care deeply about their air, land, and water and have a right to know where the candidates for president stand on major environmental issues. Senator Kerry has challenged President Bush to a series of debates, including one focused on our environmental future. Bush & Co. has yet to respond.

Sign this petition and urge President Bush to accept Kerry's challenge for a debate on the environment. The American public wants to hear the President explain why his environmental policies fail to protect the environment -- and instead benefit pro-polluting industries. As long as the Bush Administration is willing to put pro-environment spin on their anti-environment policies, they should not hesitate to discuss the issues in an open forum with Senator Kerry -- a candidate with a proven pro-environment record.

The American public has a right to know how each of the candidates plan to protect our priceless natural heritage and create a sustainable future for us all. Moreover, the American public deserves more than negative television ads that ignore or evade the issues -- they deserve an open discussion of the candidates' records and views before all Americans.

Dear Bush-Cheney Campaign,

Americans care deeply about their air, land, and water and have a right to know where the candidates for president stand on major environmental issues. Senator Kerry has challenged President Bush to a series of debates, including one focused on our environmental future. I am writing to ask the President to accept this challenge and defend his environmental record before the American people. If you believe he has fulfilled his obligation to put the public health and public interest first, he should have no hesitation in discussing his policies in an open forum with Senator Kerry.

Rather than hiding behind millions in negative television ads that ignore or evade the issues, this will be an opportunity for President Bush and Senator Kerry to discuss their records and views before all Americans. The voters have a right to know how both candidates plan to protect our priceless natural heritage and create a sustainable future for all.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Support a Bush vs Kerry Debate on Environment” petition!

Protecting the environment is directly correlated to being able to protect ourselves, to fight off diseases and truely have a strong constitution.

Tremendous fines for Industrial pollution, protection of old growth forrests, The development and utilization of alternative fuels, funding better and more profitable recycling programs....

We have to find a way for big business to continue to: 1) financially profit from their endeavors yet, 2) resolve the industrial residual effects they create on our enviroment. A debate would probably promote placing this challenge in the forefront as a major priority of this administration. Senator Kerry could then be a major 'antagonist' regarding this issue. Senator Kerry could literally request the President and members of his administration go with him (Senator Kerry) to the shores of inlets of the Potomac and show him first hand the garbage & pollutants floating around in the waters surrounding the seat of the 'Greatest Country in the World!' With enough cameras and PR this would probably cause this administration to become VERY uncomfortable with Senator Kerry's public challenge. Senator Kerry will probably have to be very dogged about publicly challanging the lax stance this administration has had on envirnomental issues. But, whether we realize it or not, our very lives depend on bringing this matter to the forefront! Force President Bush to publicly face the realization that if we do not start dealing with this issue now there will be little left for his own daughters and their families to enjoy. As man encroaches more and more on the physical world of our wildlife there will be fewer of our fellow creatures in existance. This is a fact! The simple joys all of us have enjoyed as children exploring the physical world will become more and more limited until it no longer exists. Worse yet, it CAN NEVER be regained again! We should work toward giving the heirs of our earth at the very least the simple joys we were priviledged enough to experience in our lifetimes. We owe them that.

MANY. 1)Why is it that despite the endeavors of Congress & the EPA the shores & inlets of OUR Potomac river (District of Columbia & Virginia) are covered in waste & filth? 2)We need to have in place emergency measures that when our environment reaches a certain level of toxicity certain laws will immediately go into effect in order to to preserve what is left of our environment. The laws would cover mortoriums on building, the shutting down of businesses(due to contamination by toxic pollutants), contain the leakage of toxic chemicals into the groundwater & mandate that certain vehicles not be built anymore. BAN the use of barges to contain the waste & trash of cities.Require a congressional review of this practice and seek out professionals in the field of waste containment from major cities and see if there is a safer method for the transportation of waste. Also have this committee review the location of state dumping sites and whether these sites effect the surrounding environment. Pull into these hearings state officials and their fiscal records regarding the purchasing of dumping of waste by city governments in certain areas for fees. 3) Bring to the forefront the emergency need for the ENTIRE federal, state & county governments to go online. Challenge the administration to put into motion an emergency program for agency management to work through the major problems they face in going online & come up with solutions to these problems. Challenge Microsoft & other major computer corporations to develop programs for the government to monitor the production and hours of the actual online work product of employees. Find out what agencies are behind in changing over to online work production & have 'on call' a group of IT professionals. The IT professionals would then work with the agency officials to find a way to convert the work product of the agency to an online work product. Work toward a goal of having the employee do a major portion their actual work week online, at home. This would have a three fold benefit for our country: 1)Lessen the pollution in and around major cities by a HUGE degree. Encourage people to face the need for serious thought about ways WE as citizens have to personally endeavor to lessen the pollution. 2)Reduce to a large degree the vast security nightmare our Homeland Security agency has to handle at any given time. It will dramatically reduce the number of workers coming and going into the worksites thus making the securing of our government sites more viable. 3) Cut the actual operation costs for the government. Force the hand of government agencies to look at their part in the pollution and waste. Show them how they can be more fiscally responsible! Reduce spending in an area where funds can be redirected toward resolving the major pollution isses. Establish a program where there is a financial award for the common citizen's inventivness and involement in resolving our environmental issues. Establish a website where these people are heralded as heroes and their inventions are touted. Show major officials physically working in ways to lessen the pollution, even if it means merely walking to work (or to the store, etc.) or picking up litter on the street. Encourage in a major way the regreening of the earth through the planting of plants and seeds on the open ground. Encourage distribution of seeds whether it be wildflowers, grass or whatever in order to preserve our clean air and our atmosphere.

Dont you care about OUR future?!?!

Our enviorment has been slowly deteriorating. Do you want our whole earth to look like New Jersey? Plants and animals wont be able to reproduce because of all of the chemicals in their enviorments and slowly our earth will turn into a wasteland and we wont even be able to stand it. This is a threat to our health and race as well.

I have a dirty coal-burning power plant 4 miles from my home which is currently petitioning to increase in size by 3 times. I HIGHLY resent the fact that Mr. Bush has already or is trying to weaken clean air standards so that these big corporate polluters can release MORE mercury into the air that my young children are breathing. Haven't we concluded that mercury is poisonous to ALL living things?!?!?! I can't see any advantages (to the American citizen) to allowing the dirtiest energy source known to man to pollute more, except that maybe the corporations that are mining and burning coal are big campaign contributors to Mr. Bush. Who is standing up for the public in this issue? Certainly not Mr. Bush. Please stop this madness!!!

Clean air, clean water, energy dependence, oil drilling locations, deforestation, renewable energy, the list goes on and on!

Bush's policies on the enviroment are hurting it not helping it. He makes policies to profit from not for nature to profit from. He needs to be stopped, he is poisoning us all.

Chemical levels in water that are not safe. Logging of our precious forests. Making taxpayers clean up waste instead of the polluters. Lowering regulations on air pollutants from vehicles (especially diesel)

George W. Bush, you say you want to protect the inocent from what harms them and sends threats. You focus on terrorism but you are not focussing on what is KILLING us day by day, our enviroment is in critical condition,Mother Earth does not WAIT to be fixed or helped. Sooner or later these issues will be more alarming, poisons in water, chemicals in the air causing cancers, skin cancers will soar in children as the years go on just by being outside!!! DONT YOU GET THIS!!! your OWN GRANDCHILDREN and CHILDREN will SUFFER and pay the ultimate price. There will be horrific ecomonic crisis if the enviroment is not fixed, soaring health care costs,is just the start!!

PLEASE PLEASE!! As a democratic supporter you would gain my respect and millions of others by helping the enviroment, truly helping the enviroment in the RIGHT way!!!!

As a citizen of the U.S. I too would like to know where my candidates stand on our environmental issues today. Adding to this statement it is making my decision very difficult as we near the voting date and it is time for our President to bone up and start answering all of our questions!

Air quality, the burning of fossil fuels, New concepts for energy, more funding for environmental science, demands for emmisions inspections on all vehicles no matter how new or old.
