Economic Crisis Leaves Pets Hungry Too

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
During the global economic crisis people are sacrificing a lot but they are not the only ones. Household pets, often considered to be a part of the family, are affected by financial hardship as well. Owners of dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, chickens and even iguanas are finding it increasingly difficult to feed and care for their additional family members.

The health and safety of pets depend on loving care which sometimes has substantial costs. Pet food and regular veterinary care are necessities for companion animals, but the costs add up quickly.

One such animal suffering due to the financial meltdown is horses, majestic yet expensive animals. Hay and feed prices have escalated while owner incomes remain fixed or are declining.

But there is a glimmer of hope. Some area food pantries are recognizing the desperate need for animal care, and are distributing pet food along with their grocery donations.

Tell Congress that our families including our pets need help accessing food during the economic crisis.

The devastating economic crisis affects all American families. And for almost two-thirds of Americans, pets are valued members of the family and they need your help. Americans are struggling to put food in food dishes, let alone the table.

Companion animals increase the quality of life for their owners as most pets are valuable members of many American families. But incomes are decreasing or disappearing and many families cannot afford to feed and provide proper care for their loving animals.

[Your comment here]

Americans need more help accessing food for their families, including their pets. Please help to pass legislation that makes food more readily available for all Americans.

Sincerely,

Our pets are members of the family and so many families are having to make the hard decision to turn in their pets to shelters. There are not enough homes for this pets who have done nothing to bring this on. Food pantries should include food for pets as well.

Unfortunately, I know full well the reality of this situation. The kitchen in my home feeds my human children first, the animal kids next and if I'm lucky, I get to eat as well. Our pets are family and need as much help as we do. We would all be saddened beyond imagining if we are forced to surrender our animal family because we can no longer care for them. My children have lost enough, please help to keep our entire family together. Thank you.

Animals should have the same care available as humans. Food, shelter, clean water.

My cat is like my child. If he can not eat then I will not eat. Basically what he needs I figure out first, then comes me. Those that love their "pets" actually consider them family. It has been proven that the touch of an animal can bring so much joy and in this time we all need some sort of joy. But if people can not afford to get food then that joy turns to heartache. Those of us with animals who care really could use that helping hand. One may say if you can not afford then just give away, I say give away your son or daughter then we will talk.

Please make sure these beautiful pets are provided for. They are living and breathing just as we are and need to be taken care of the way we would any member of our families.

I have pets and know too well that this economy has made it very difficult to care for oneself let alone the pets! Most of us would sooner do without than let our pets do without - assistance is definitely needed.

Companion animals have proven therapeutic value to ALL human beings - whether they are disabled, infirm, lonesome or not! The comfort that bonding affords - much less the health of its participants - should not be jeopardized due to monetary concerns. Caring for another sentient creature teaches our young, future members of society responsibility and mercy. Surely this far-reaching benefit appeals to even an unemotional person.
