We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:

Stop the Killing of Deaf Dalamations

Target: Dalmation Club of America All Dalamation Clubs, President, Breeders
Sponsor: Mustang Beam, Deaf Pets of America
  • Signatures: 3,555
  • Goal: 3,000
  • Deadline: 10-4-2006
This is what the Dalamation Club of America states:

Responsible breeders NEVER knowingly sell, place or give away deaf pups to pet homes. Deaf pups should ALWAYS be humanely destroyed by a veterinarian. In the event that a deaf pup is inadvertently placed, it should be replaced with a hearing pup. Many breeders have their deaf pups put down at three to four weeks, though some choose to wait a few weeks longer. Dalmatian pups normally start to hear at fourteen to sixteen days of age, and hear by five weeks of age if they are going to hear.

Well, I'm sorry to tell you this but that is WRONG.  Don't even breed the dalmatian if you cannot accept the consequences of doing such.  Deaf pups have the right to live just as deaf children do.  It is my goal to shut as many of you down as possible.  You may laugh all you want but it is not going to work.  You messed with the wrong DEAF animal rescuer.

Deaf animals are NOT aggressive.  They are simply trying to survive just like deaf people are.  We are often considered aggressive because we are loud voiced and we sign "big" as in gestures.  But its not it.  We are simply communicating.  These animals can be worked with and taught how to function where they can communicate better.  Dalmatians by nature are aggressive animals due to their HIGH energy nature.  It doesn't discriminate between whether you are disabled or not.

The creator of the "deaf dal" page on the DCA is Carol Chase and her email is:  mailto:Dals4me@aol.com . Send her an email objecting to the guidelines on her page.  Be nice because violence only begets more violence.

Deaf Pets of America rescues animals like the ones the club wants to kill.  We find forever homes for these unwanted DEAF dalmatians.

We need stronger LAW-SPECIFIC legislation in our House and Senate to prevent this type of abuse.  This is ABUSE that hides behind the "breeder" and if they even have any feelings, they'd know this is very wrong.  You can cut and paste a copy of this including the website URL to the page on the breeder's site that promotes the killing of deaf companion animals and send it on to your state legislator.

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/?lvl=L

Just click here and type in STATE code or the ZIP code if you know it.  Thank you for doing all you can.  I want to CHANGE or SHUT DOWN these types of breeder clubs.

For your information, deafness was bred into these breeds in the first place so that they would not be scared by the sirens and loud noises as in firefighting.  Now they want to kill them off.

(Forgive my spelling of the word dalmatian)
Thank you Bruce Combs for this incredible picture.

This petition is now closed.  Thank you so much for helping make it a success.  I am currently on the road for a cross-country move from IL to MT and will get this printed up and mailed to the person(s) involved.  I am now working on wording on a bill I want to propose in the House regarding this type of abuse and holding breeders fully responsible for pre-testing aka genetic testing that can prevent this type of abuse.  Feel free to email me with suggestions and/or resources.

3,558 7:42 pm PDT, Sep 13   Anonymous Texas United States   Yes. Every animal has the right to live. Does a deaf child have to right to live. That may seem over the top but to some people their animals are their children. How can you take away an animals life when they show no pain or suffering.
3,557 4:31 pm PDT, Sep 1 Ms. Anonymous Texas United States Yes, if they continue their inhumane treatment of Deaf Dals! I have the most wonderful dog in the world. He is a Deaf Dal! I heard about the killing of Deaf dogs on a PBS program years ago, and in 2000 I found this precious boy at the Dalmatian Rescue Center in Arlington, Texas. I adopted him at one year of age. He is the smartest dog I have ever seen. He learns signs the first day I teach him a new sign! He is always observing what I am doing! He knows signs for everything! He attends a Deaf school in Mexico where I teach Deaf children. He LOVES life, is extremely athletic by nature, and is excellent with all ages of children. He has no idea he is different from other dogs. He lives inside and is very well behaved. I had to be consistent with him in the beginning, but now he is almost a perfect dog. We travel very often and he does great in the car. I bought a seat belt for dogs and he wears it when we go anywhere. I wouldn't trade him for anything. My dog is bi-cultural (comfortable in Mexico and America) and knows Mexican signs (MSL)!
3,556 9:36 am PDT, Aug 9 Mrs. Jessica Joseph Missouri United States Yes, I definately do. How is this organization in the best interest of Dalmatians if they are willing to kill them because they are not "perfect". I think is is sick & inhumane to kill any animal for this reason. Dogs were put on this earth to be a friend and companion to humans. It is completely sick that people would do this! Of course! I have had many dogs, including Dalmatians. The most wonderful dog in my life was a Dal. Whether he was deaf, or missing a leg or whatever, it would not and should not have mattered to me. They certainly don't care if we have a handicap. They love us unconditionally, as we should love them!
3,555 9:38 am PDT, Jul 15 Ms. janelle barabash New York United States   deafness is not a sign of death -all animals deserve the same rights as humans to a life that is safe from condemnation and abuse.
3,554 11:08 am PDT, Jul 13 Ms. Anonymous New York United States
3,553 4:39 pm PDT, Jun 27   Athena Cameron New York United States ABSOLUTLY!!!! I find this disgusting that such heartless people can do such a thing to an inocent animal simply because they are deaf. Would you kill a person that was deaf?? Than why a loving companion? ABSOLUTLY!!!!!!!!!! WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!
3,552 7:12 pm PDT, Jun 17 Ms. Jackie Bettini North Carolina United States   Yes, they have the right to live. Deaf animals still have the other four senses and have a right to contribute to every day life. We as humans do not kill our deaf, so we should we kill our best friends because they are deaf.
3,551 10:00 pm PDT, Jun 13 Ms. amanda grady Tennessee United States   My daughter is deaf so does that mean that she shouldn't be alive? Animals are no different from people.
3,550 9:44 am PDT, Jun 12 Mrs. lisa brumale New York United States if you choose to breed -raise with responsibility or STOP this is not fair to pick and choose who will survive or not. you get what you get in life. yes
3,549 10:53 pm PDT, Jun 7 Ms. Anonymous   Sri Lanka Club should be there to provide a service to the nation/community. therefor i beleive instead of making steps to kill these innocent animals, the CLub can help toprovide medical treatments to make these animals hear. yes , they have the right to live. It is extremely inhuman to kill poor animals like that. we should help them. I have a dalmation age of 6 months.. he is too deaf and I am so sad but I am doing evrything for him. I know it s so hard to tell him or make him listen to my commands.. but I love him. I still hope that he will hear in furture.
3,548 10:46 am PDT, May 16   Anonymous New York United States
3,547 5:33 am PDT, May 9 Mrs. Anonymous Pennsylvania United States I think theyshould honestly revise their stance and not predetermine a dogs worth and value on if it can hear or not... they need to listen to those of us who have spent a dogs' lifetine in utter enjoyment of their companionship and love. Absolutely!! We had the most beautiful dalmatian, Belle, who lived to the ripe old age of 14 years... she was a joy and "listened" better that our hearing liver spotted dal! However he was very good about getting her attention and if we said "fetch Belle" he would go and get her ... she did very well with the hearing "partner". They both have passed and we have just adopted the most beautiful little deaf girl dal! She will live with us and our hearing black lab... to think that deaf animals are aggressive and neurotic is like thinking that Helen Keller was stupid and couldn't learn! There are a lot of "Annie Sullivan" dog people out there who would love the opportunity to teach, train, and adopt a deaf dog into their home... this is an antiquated eleitist belief that borders on the same "dogma" that Hitler promoted! Yes a deaf dog is more work to train insome ways but since many trainers begin with hand signals before voice commands in many respects its not a lot differndt. Also with the creationof vibrating collars it is much easier to get your dogs attention which was one of the main problems in training... to put down a puppy at 6 weeks of age because they failed a BAER exam is prejudging the potential of that animal and unconcionable... when a dog is aggressive and an attacker is another story but even in that case the dog should have the chance to be properly trained before making the ultimate decision...
3,546 9:04 pm PDT, Apr 14 Ms. Jennifer Skelton Texas United States
3,545 10:46 am PDT, Apr 4 Ms. Donna Avent California United States That is very silly. We don't need to kill deaf pupies or cats. Do you think it is okay to kill deaf people as deaf cats or deaf cats?? Yes, Deaf animal have the right to live. Same thing as deaf people.
3,544 7:21 am PDT, Mar 17 Ms. Keri Bennett New York United States   Of course! Why shouldnt they? Because they have a handicap?? Do we kill humans because they are born without hearing??
3,543 5:48 pm PDT, Mar 9 Mrs. Mistella Kneil-Haefner Washington D.C. United States
3,542 10:50 am PST, Jan 13 Ms. krissy shannon Missouri United States no because i think that its awsome that people want to help save animals. yes i do because just because they are deaf doesnt mean anything they have the right to live as we do. like the deaf people they are living right? and the deaf dogs should live too. i hate people that kill dogs for no reasons.i have a deaf mom.and she is alive.
3,541 5:00 pm PST, Jan 2 Ms. miranda brown Kentucky United States NO! Then what would happen to all the deaf dalmatians in need, they depend on you to give them a second chance? They deserve to have a right just like us humans have! YES!!!! Totally!!! You should not judge animals that way, you should judge them by their hearts!and the love they show you!

Stop the Killing of Deaf Dalamations

Position on Dalmatian Deafness

From the Board of Governors of the Dalmatian Club of America  With the rising popularity of the Dalmatian breed, there has been a rapid increase in the number of deaf Dalmatian pups showing up in homes, pet shops and Humane Societies across the country. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM.

Deafness is NOT uncommon in Dalmatians. It has been estimated that from 10% to 12% of the breed is deaf. Recent discoveries in the genetics of deafness have made it possible to reduce the incidence of deafness, with the possibility of virtually eliminating it in the future. Hearing research is currently being financed by the Dalmatian Club of America, various regional Dalmatian clubs and interested individuals.

However, for the time being, it is important that deaf pups be dealt with in a responsible and HUMANE fashion.

The deaf pups which are showing up in unsuspecting homes, pet shops and Humane Societies are generally bred by either "commercial breeders" (puppy mills) or by inexperienced Dalmatian owners who are unaware of deafness in the breed, are unable to identify deaf pups or are unwilling to have them put down. NO ONE should consider raising a litter of Dalmatians without being prepared to deal responsibly with any resulting deaf puppies.

The Dalmatian Club of America Board of Governors feels very strongly that deaf pups should NEVER be sold, placed or given away, and most certainly should not be bred from. Deaf Dalmatians are hard to raise, difficult to control ( they are often hit by cars when they "escape") and often become snappish or overly aggressive, especially when startled.

IF YOU ARE THE OWNER OF A FEMALE DALMATIAN, and plan to raise a litter, be sure that you are prepared to deal responsibly with any resulting deaf pups. If you have trouble identifying deaf pups, please ask for assistance from an experienced breeder.       IF YOU ARE A STUD DOG OWNER, be sure that your stud contract requires that deaf pups be properly handled.       IF YOU ARE THE OWNER OF A DEAF DALMATIAN, and are having problems with the dog, don't feel"guilty" about it. Consider starting over with a healthy, hearing pup. (And DO have the deaf dog put down.)       IF YOU ARE AFFILIATED WITH AN ANIMAL SHELTER, HUMANE SOCIETY OR DOG RESCUE SERVICE, PLEASE do not attempt to place the deaf Dalmatian puppies and adults that come in, and do not advertise for a "special home" for the"poor little deaf  Dalmatian." The HUMANE approach is to put down the deaf Dals and concentrate on finding good homes for the healthy, hearing dogs.       IF YOU ARE A PET SHOP OWNER, please remember that deaf Dalmatians should NEVER be sold.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO PURCHASE A DALMATIAN, contact the Dalmatian Club of America, the closest regional Dal club, or an experienced local breeder who will guarantee that ay pups offered for sale have normal hearing.       IF YOU ARE A VETERINARIAN, please advise your clients to put down any deaf pups they may have bred. PLEASE do not make it any more difficult for your client by suggesting that perhaps a "special" home might be found. With the enormous surplus of unwanted dogs in this country, there is no need to preserve dogs with problems such as deafness.

We need to shut down this club.  ASAP!!!
