Stand With Trans Americans: Pass the Equality Act

On August 15, Tamara Dominguez became at least the 17th transgender woman to be murdered this year in the US. Her death follows the brutal killings of Elisha Walker in North Carolina, Shade Schuler in Texas, Amber Monroe in Michigan, Kandis Capri in Arizona and other transgender women of color.

Not every incident ends in violence, but trans Americans face routine discrimination, persecution and harassment in their homes, at their jobs and even public space. Shockingly, much of this discrimination is not illegal.

Protections for transgender employees only exist in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Trans Americans in 31 states -- including the states where Elisha, Shade, Amber and Kandis were murdered -- live in constant fear of losing their jobs, their homes and even their lives.

Last month, Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced the Equality Act to address some of this discrimination. If passed, it would add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the protections that already exist based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

Securing equal protection under the law for trans members of our communities is an important step towards dismantling prejudice, fighting hatred and making the world safer and more just for all of us.

In honor of Tamara and all trans Americans bravely living each day in the face of this violent crisis, please tell your members of Congress to co-sponsor The Equality Act.
Dear [Member of Congress],

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor The Equality Act (H.R. 3185, S. 1858).

Her death follows the recent murders of other transgender women of color including Elisha Walker in North Carolina, Shade Schuler in Texas, Amber Monroe in Michigan and Kandis Capri in Arizona.

Not every incident ends in violence, but trans Americans face routine discrimination, persecution and harassment in their homes, at their jobs and even public space. Shockingly, much of this discrimination is not illegal.
