Make a Fair and Just Immigration Reform a Priority

2007 brings a new Congress, and with it, the hope that they will move to make a fair and humane immigration reform a priority.

There are many like myself who have been in immigration limbo for years because of human error; either by our own doing or because of a broken bureaucracy.

My story is not unique, as I am, perhaps one of many hundred thousands of children whose parents journeyed into the US for a better future, only to join them later.  I was ten years old when I arrived in the United States in 1978 to join my mother and sister.  I was coming of age at the time of the 1986 amnesty; and not fully aware of the opportunity that was before me.  Now at nearly thirty-nine years old I am tired of living my life in fear and living in the shadows.

Luckily I met someone who has loved me regardless of my situation.  Even though he is a citizen and has petition for a visa on my behalf many years ago, I still cannot re-adjust my status.  I would be gravely penelized and banned from living in the US for at least ten years.  There are many like myself whose families maybe broken up because of a broken bureaucracy.

I urge you to enact realistic and humane comprehensive immigration reform that:

1.Includes a path to citizenship for all undocumented people

2.Increases family visas in order to keep families together

3.Restores and respects civil rights and due process

4.Provides an effective program for future immigrants that protects their rights and includes a path to citizenship
