Tell L'Oréal: Remove Chemicals Linked To Breast Cancer From Anti-aging Products

Would you put Teflon on your face? Did you know some L'Oréal anti-aging creams and face powders use the same chemical that creates a nonstick surface on some cookware to create a smooth finish to makeups and lotions?

That's a recipe for concern, because PTFE can be contaminated with perfluoroctonoic acid (PFOA) — a toxic chemical linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and reproductive harm. PTFE is the same chemical known by the trade name Teflon.

A recent report published by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Breast Cancer Fund found PFOA in over one-third of the personal care products we tested including:

  • L'Oréal's Garnier Fructis Ultra-Lift Transformer Anti-Age Skin Corrector and
  • L'Oréal's Garnier Fructis Ultra-Life Anti-Wrinkle Firming Moisturizer.

In recognition of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, please join us in demanding that L'Oréal remove chemicals linked to breast cancer in anti-aging products.
Dear Mr. Rozé,

I am writing on behalf of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the millions of concerned citizens we represent both in the U.S. and around the world.

Last March the Campaign wrote you to ask that L'Oréal make a public commitment to eliminate carcinogens from its personal care and cosmetics products. Since their initial communication with you, over 125,000 people have signed petitions, emails and letters joining their call to action asking you to rid your products of cancer-causing chemicals.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has in past communication specifically highlighted the use of PTFE as an ingredient of concern due to its potential PFOA (perfluoroctonoic acid) contamination. PFOA is a toxic ingredient linked to breast cancer, endocrine disruption and reproductive harm.

Now, a recent report published by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Breast Cancer Fund found PFOA in over one-third of the personal care products they tested including:

  • L'Oréal’s Garnier Fructis Ultra-Lift Transformer Anti-Age Skin Corrector and

  • L'Oréal’s Garnier Fructis Ultra-Life Anti-Wrinkle Firming Moisturizer.

I am deeply concerned that the very demographic most affected by breast cancer is the marketing target for L’Oréal’s® anti-aging products that contain chemicals linked to the disease.

More and more scientific evidence is linking breast and other cancers to the chemicals in our everyday environment — chemicals in our cosmetics and personal care products, our household cleaning products, our food, our air and our water.

I urge you to stop marketing anti-aging products to women with chemicals linked to breast cancer. The best way to prioritize women’s health is to stop using chemicals linked to cancer in cosmetics. Ending my daily exposure to chemicals linked to cancer, especially in anti-aging products, is a critically important step that L'Oréal can take today to help prevent breast cancer.

As a L'Oréal consumer, please reply back and tell me how you plan to address my important concerns.
