There is no cure for polio. Yet this highly infectious and debilitating disease – which mainly affects young children and can cause lifelong paralysis – can be prevented with a vaccine that costs only $0.60.
In the 1980s, polio paralyzed at least 1,000 children every day all over the world. But today, after international efforts to immunize every child everywhere, 5 million people are walking who would otherwise be paralyzed and the world is almost polio-free.
Several regions of the world have been certified polio-free, yet polio remains endemic in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. And as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio.
Polio was one of the most dreaded childhood diseases of the 20th century. Please show your support for global eradication of polio, so no child will know the crippling effects of this disease ever again.
