Upon their arrival at the ASPCA Animal Hospital, it was clear that one-year-old Cal and three-year-old Portobello hadn't had an easy life. The pair came from a large hoarding case, in which more than 20 cats were rescued from tragic conditions and heartbreaking neglect.

This June marks the kickoff of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. This is the height of kitten season, which is the time of year when we see an increase in feline breeding. Kitten season creates a tremendous population explosion, and animal shelters around the country will soon be flooded with cats like Cal and Portobello in desperate need of a home.

It's also one of the most dangerous times of year for homeless cats and kittens: resources like food, money and space are stretched to the brink.
