Since April, we've experienced several tragic suicides of middle-school aged children -- each provoked by anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bullying and harassment.
These heartbreaking student suicides are a chilling reminder to all of us that we need to stand up and take action to prevent the perpetuation of soul crushing anti-LGBT behavior that is claiming young lives.
Passing the Safe Schools Improvement Act (H.R. 2262) would mark a pivotal turning point in the crucial fight for safer schools. It would establish -- for the first time in our nation's history -- a federal mandate for schools to adopt anti-bullying policies that include the categories of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. This act would ensure that schools no longer get a "pass" when they turn a blind eye to anti-LGBT behavior, and it would require them to address all forms of bullying.
Take a stand today. Urge your representative to support the Safe Schools Improvement Act today.
We took action on “Stop Bullying! Pass the Safe Schools Improvement Act”!

I have seen bullying firsthand and the destructive effects it had on my niece. It distracted her focus and concentration, affected her self esteem negatively and turned a happy child into a very sad and unhappy child. Although this situation was not provoked by an anti-LGBT sentiment it was ignored and not addressed by staff. Bullying of any type should be stopped.

Personally I was a victim of bullying. Mine was due to weight issues. Bullying of ALL types MUST be stopped. There needs to be a ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying in schools and everywhere and across all lines. Nobody deserves to feel tortured. Nobody. Ever.

School bullying is disturbingly becoming more prevalent throughout the American school systems all across the country. This, however, does not mean that it is okay. Educators, school officials, parents, students and our nation must all recognize that bullying is becoming a serious social epidemic and acknowledge that even greater measures must be taken to prevent tragic and fatal outcomes. Every student, regardless of their sexual orientation, socio economic class, etc etc has their inherent civil rights and allowing "bullying" to happen on school grounds particularly is a huge violation of their civil rights. Educators and school administrators, along with parents, must not turn a blind eye to signs and symptoms of "bullying" especially when the victim tries to speak out about actions taking place against him/her. This is NOT "all part of the growing up process" as some educators/counselors are all too familiar telling students. Bullying is a type of predatory behavior, and this must not be condoned or allowed to continue. ACTION must take place now and severe disciplinary measures must be taken against the lead bully and also those who engage in terrorizing predatory behavior in unison with the lead bully. Let's all remember how the "Group Think Model" works...one voice is almost always erradicated by the majority group voice...and with this in mind, the victims are tormented with very little defense and resources to overcome their diversity. Just say NO to bullying! We must all as a community stand up against this so no more lives are lost!

I have one grandchild in school and two other grandchildren who will soon be starting school. I can't imagine being bullied in school or out regardless of the reason. I insist this legislation is of the utmost importance and way overdue

Jack & Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, and when they reached the top, there was no water to be had, not for them anyway. What they did find were hateful bullies, who blocked them from necessity, and then pushed Jack down, which caused his broken crown, and then shoved Jill so that she went tumbling after him. All Jack & Jill had wanted was the same thing everyone else needs to live - water. But, they were gay, and sadly turned away. Intolerance speaks, while tolerance speaks volumes. Intolerance begins at home with the parents and with their parents, and the hate just festers and spreads like a deadly virus. When will people ever learn?

We really must stop bullying at schools. It can destroy a person's life if proper help for good self-esteem isn't given. Thank you!

I was bullied in high school for about 3 year's, just because I was a soft target. This affected my education, and my future, even today at 38 I still wear the mental scar's of those horrible year's . School's should be a place of growth! not isolation!
