Return Progressive Talk and Balance to Cincinnati

Target: Darryl Parks, Operations Manager AM Stations, Clear Channel
Sponsor: M Johnson, cincybalancedmedia.com
  • Signatures: 358
  • Goal: 1,000
  • Deadline: 1-5-2008
On Friday, December 8, the Cincinnati Post reported that Clear Channel programmers were terminating the progressive talk radio format on WSAI on the following Monday, changing the format to "self-help" including 3 hours a day of reruns from another Celar Channel station. Mr. Parks said: "Radio, at the end of the day, is about ratings and revenue. There were some good (liberal) shows, but they need to start looking to more broad-based subjects than just harping on politics." Mr. Parks' action leaves Cincinnati with no balance to another Clear Channel station, whose weekday lineup is over hours of right wing political shows by Laura Ingram, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and Mark Levin. It eliminated the balance of progressive talk shows by Rachel Maddow, The Young Turks, Al Franken, Ed Schultz, and Randi Rhodes, and interviews with progressive authors and legislators. Please sign the petition and help let Clear Channel and others know that there is support for progressive talk radio in Cincinnati. We will not sell email addresses or use them for anything except the purposes of the petition.

And answer to the 24/7 message of hate and mindless one sided anti-people....intorlance,midless babble, from wlw, wkrc, wmoh. If done properly with a promotion budget,It could work even in Cincinnati..

365 3:54 pm PST, Jan 24   Really MoveOn balanced media? overwhelmingly liberal colleges put out the liberalized graduates overwhlming the media fields- from the heads of the smallest talent agencies to the HR departments of nearly every mainstream film and television production houses- and every writer inbetween. If there is any skew of media bias it is to the left in nearly every visual image this country confronts in our daily lives (including advertising). Get real, the san fran socialist freaks you miss listening to are winning without radio. The country is 85% moron thanks to the dumbing down of our population through our educational system (see above)and these ignorant masses are like mice via those images. Grow up and get a real life.
364 4:11 am PST, Jan 2 Mr. Corey Foister Bring back liberal talk.
363 5:46 pm PST, Nov 29 Ms. Nicole Perrot People need to hear some good lessons in civics again and Thom Hartmann is the best at defining what it means to be American and what the Constitution mean.
362 12:18 pm PDT, Oct 6   Peter T Kallay Please give a voice to the half of the electorate who wants to hear a liberal or progressive viewpoint. Randi Rhodes and Rachel Maddow, especially, explain things so clearly
361 8:00 pm PDT, Sep 14   kyle rife It's time for an opportunity for the people of Cincinnati to hear the other side of the issues- stop the censorship!
360 3:40 pm PDT, Sep 8   Gared Oudeans
359 8:59 am PDT, Aug 15   Anonymous The hatred spewed by Rush Limbaugh needs to be countered with a Progressive voice. Anyone who cares about having a Democracy would understand this.
358 8:01 am PDT, Aug 7 Ms. Liz Selvia Even if you try to hide the truth in this way, it will simply resurface in another. And when we start doing away with those who are part of the problem, your corporation will on the chopping block.
357 8:21 pm PDT, Aug 2   Bill Cahalan I loved hearing Al Frankin and Ed Schultz every day. You still support another mostly political talk (right wing) station. Please consider the tastes and desires of so many listeners in our region whose needs are not being met.
356 6:26 pm PDT, Jul 23 Ms. Elizabeth Ping
355 5:21 am PDT, Jul 23   kate gallion How do you justify ignoring 49.9% of your demograhic who voted AGAINST the extremist conservative agenda last November? With that much market share-somebody is really missing the boat-or bonanza!
354 10:26 pm PDT, Jul 22   Daniel Ticotsky the talk radio available now on Cincinnati commercial radio stations is disturbing
353 7:10 pm PDT, Jul 22 Dr. William Joiner It is simply a matter of balance
352 4:03 pm PDT, Jul 22   Eric Wolff
351 9:36 am PDT, Jul 22   Elizabeth Motter
350 1:30 pm PDT, Jul 15 Ms. Anonymous Cincinnati is anything but "fair and ballanced" when there is nothing but right-wing, conservative views being expressed on the airwaves. Give an option not just for pregressives, but for all to hear. *** Jerry Springer for MAYOR! :) ***
349 11:31 am PDT, May 20 Ms. Anonymous Cincinnati needs a progressive POV to balance out the overwhelming amount of conservative radio hosts that have flooded the airwaves. Cincinnati needs Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Rachel Maddow to tell it like it is.
348 6:45 pm PDT, May 10 Mr. Philip Bullio
347 2:08 pm PDT, May 6   Kathy Burgstaller I am disgusted by what has been allowed to happen here.
346 12:32 pm PDT, Apr 26   Ted Roll How I miss Randi Rhodes' voice on my drive home from work each day. I need to hear news on politics without listening to Savage rants.
345 3:24 pm PDT, Apr 25 Mr. Steven Carter We can always listen to Air America on-line at http://www.airamerica.com/listen and on XM ch.167. I hope we get this because people in our region are drowning in a rightwing-radio cesspool, while others around the nation are informed by, and converse with, progressive radio hosts. They also enjoy the option of listening to the right (if they so choose) in order to compare the quality of the discussion. At least one of our local radio stations should offer the option of something left. Don't get me wrong, NPR is great, but its leadership has been selected by the right and is unfortunately becoming less informative. If more Americans could tune in and listen to progressive topics, there would be an outcry for impeachment of the current administration, and checks and balances restored to our republic.
344 7:23 am PDT, Apr 16 Mr. William Ferguson Bring back Progressive Talk Radio!!
343 11:12 am PDT, Apr 13   Shannon Edwards
342 7:43 pm PDT, Apr 12 Mrs. Melissa Hartman STOP the neo-conservative media conglomerates from stealing and suppressing our constitutional rights! Bush claims we are fighting oppressive regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan...yet he sponsors the largest network of "non-elected" corporate authoritarians ever known to this once free nation. Power to the people!
341 10:22 am PDT, Apr 12 Mr. Jim Helriggle We need the TRUTH!!!
340 4:36 am PDT, Apr 10   Michael Carlucci
339 10:51 am PDT, Apr 4 Mr. robert groves since cumulus radio is now airing conserative talk on fm 96 that givee cincinnati 3 station spouting right wing ideas and no radio voice representing liberal ideas. where is democracy in cincinnati talk radio
338 10:11 am PDT, Apr 3 Mr. Anonymous Bring back balance and some voices that reflect what so many people think, and believe.
337 4:36 pm PDT, Mar 31   Anonymous Clear Channel must be held accountable to the best interest of the public, not only the interest of their bank accounts and the current administration.
336 6:26 am PDT, Mar 29 Mr. Jerry Baker It's no coincidence that after the Democrates regained control of the Ohio Statehouse, and took back a U.S. Senate Seat, that Progressive radio has been lost in Cincinnati, Columbus, and soon, NE Ohio. I had the privilege of speaking to Ed Schultz, live on his show, about the situation here. Ed informed me (and his audience) that WSAI has lost half it's listeners since the switch...yet they claim it was a business case issue. B.S. Darryl Parks, the Operations Director for Clear Channel, allowed his own right-wing political views to interfere with any success this station could have had with proper promotion and management. It's time to fight back!
335 5:27 am PDT, Mar 24 Mrs. Pam Strasser I used to listen to Cincy (local) radio until progressive programming was eliminated. I only listen to computer radio streaming now. More Hannity and Savage and Limbaugh are NOT needed. We need to hear both sides of issues -- not just insane blather.
334 2:30 pm PDT, Mar 23 Mrs. Sarah Elmore
333 8:20 am PDT, Mar 15 Mr. Scott DeMariano All day, every day, working with some ultra conservatives, I actually have to try and convince them that Rush, Hannity, Savage, etc. are all lying gasbags full of hate and without regard to fact. It doesn't work of course, but what is worse is they can't even fathom a right wing media machine, despite evidence right in their face! Amazing, and they vote! I want to bring balance back to Ohio radio, and Clear Channel, there is no need for any more sports programming. Let's educate ourselves on what is happening in the world outside of pro sports and right wing spin...
332 1:14 pm PDT, Mar 14 Ms. Carla Riggs This is another reason that progressive, liberal professionals won't move here or stay here (in Cincy).
331 9:11 pm PST, Mar 10   A Bowden
330 1:30 pm PST, Mar 4   Greg Troisi It would be nice to hear a progressive voice on the radio once again. I miss that drive time radio show and then turning it on at home so I could hear the entire show. I miss Ed Schutz.
329 9:41 am PST, Feb 18   Bonnie Greenberg We have to stop the corporate "blackout" of the truth that progressive talk radio brings to the airwaves. On February 26, Entercom Sacramento will change its format from progressive and Air America programming to ESPN Sports. Wow! Good for the delusional thinkers who want to escape from the future of our country. Just another abuse of our public airwaves by the corporate giants as a result of "corporate personhood".
328 6:34 pm PST, Feb 17 Mr. Anonymous a station here bad
327 4:44 am PST, Feb 17 Mr. Wayne Osborne There is nothing fit to listen to in southwestern Ohio. Rush makes me vomit, Sean is vile, and Laura is a liar. Would someone PLEASE put on something that I can listen to, say like, Thom Hartmann?
326 1:26 pm PST, Feb 16 Mr. Charles Scheid
325 9:43 pm PST, Feb 14 Mrs. Anonymous I listened to Air America everyday and miss listening to progressive talk radio. I have not turned the radio on since this option was taken away from me.
324 7:18 am PST, Feb 14 Ms. Anonymous I am totally disgusted with Clear Channel's decision to censor what we hear, by using the iron fist, and yanking progressive talk radio. I feel that we have a right, to hear what we want Just because Mr. Parks feels it's a format that he's not personally comfortable with, and not to mention the fact that it's all based on MONEY. The reason they didn't have a lot of ad support is that NOBODY KNEW about the station!! They did NOTHING to advertise.. except for some Springer Billboards, that were few and far between. They let it fail on purpose.
323 8:46 pm PST, Feb 11   alisa love
322 8:02 am PST, Feb 9 Mrs. Jennie Raynes
321 12:27 pm PST, Feb 8 Mrs. Rene Thompson They moved Progressive Radio from a strong station to one that you could barely pick up across the river in Covington and then say, "See, they weren't listening." I didn't stop listening to Progressives, just the Cincinnati stations and their advertisers.
320 8:02 pm PST, Feb 5   Jonathan Ledbetter Progressive radio made this country vote for a change last November. That change scares the GOP, so of course they're going to flip stations under the guise of "low ratings." In December we scored a major victory by preventing Madison Wisconsin's The Mike from a similar sports-themed fate. Unfortunately, the fight rages on in Boston, New Haven, Columbus, Dallas, Missoula, and here in Cincinnati. I'm not from Cincinnati (I've never even been to Ohio), but coming from another market where progressive talk is tenuous at best (Reno, Nevada), I am helping support the cause in the hopes that if Reno's progressive talk station goes down, there are others across the country that will voice their support. Don't let the conservatives exert their influence anymore! Bring balance back to Cincinnati!
319 7:00 pm PST, Feb 5   Anonymous I rarely listen to the radio since progressive radio is no longer avaiable in the Cincinnati area. I miss it very much.
318 2:48 pm PST, Feb 5 Ms. Elizabeth Bushong
317 2:36 pm PST, Feb 5   Anonymous I don't even use my radio anymore! I'll be dusting the cob-webs off of it until progressive talk is returned.
316 9:05 am PST, Feb 5 Ms. Anonymous
315 4:29 pm PST, Feb 4   Mary Raczko
314 5:10 pm PST, Feb 2   Dave Luckens THERE USED TO BE A FAIRNESS DOCTRINE,AN ACKNOWLEGEMENT OF THE GOV'S ROLE IN LICENSING,AND REGULATING THE AIRWAVES,AND FREQUENCIES.NOW,FREE-MARKET SOPHISTS DICTATE THAT IF I TUNE IN AT ALL TO POLITICAL TALK RADIO,I NOT ONLY HAVE TO LISTEN TO RIGHT WING PROPAGANDA,I MUST INDIRECTLY PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE.AT LEAST BRING BACK THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE SO THAT ED SCHULTZ CAN UNDRESS HANNITY ON THE AIR,EXPOSING HIM FOR THE SILLY NONENTITY THAT HE REALLY IS.ED DOES THE MAINSTREAM POLITICAL NARRATIVE IN FACT BASED,EVEN HANDED,PROFESSIONAL,AND COMPASSIONATE STYLE THAT HANNITY COULD NEVER HOPE TO MATCH.ONE ON ONE,IT WOULD BE LIKE A PRO BASKETBALLER TAKING ON A BEER LEAGUE SLOB.FREE MARKET HACKS,I DARE YOU TO STOP PROTECTING HANNITY-YOU MIGHT MAKE MORE DOUGH WITH OUT HIM.
313 6:55 pm PST, Jan 30 Mrs. Anonymous Bring back Ed and Al now!
312 8:56 pm PST, Jan 29   Anonymous After AAR went off, there is absolutely no station that I can listen to. NPR is too mellow trying to be too nice to everybody, and not offend anybody. When the injustices are so black and white, then there is nothing to look in the grey areas. We need Progressive Talk in the Tri-State Area. I live in Dayton, and I know so many people who are very disappointed that both the Cincy and Columbus stations are gone.
311 4:14 pm PST, Jan 29   Judy Hampel
310 2:51 pm PST, Jan 29 Mrs. Anonymous Please bring back Ed Schultz and Progressive talk radio. I would love to have Thom Hartmann and Stephanie Miller.
309 4:33 pm PST, Jan 28   George Smed Clear Channel didn't take us serious until after the election. Now it's too late. Even though they took our station away there is still satellite radio and podcasting. The future of radio is bleak with the new information age and the ability to find your sources in so many ways. Say goodbye to newspapers and radio. By the way , where can you by a stand alone radio anyway?
308 3:36 pm PST, Jan 28   jessica jay Keep up the good fight!! There is definitely a C-O-N-spiracy to get rid of progressive/liberal talk radio!!
307 12:38 pm PST, Jan 28 Ms. Anonymous We need a balance in a news media. In these days, pwople are forgetting about the fairness, justice in a broadcasting system. This is a dangerous indication of colapse in a true democracy.
306 1:29 pm PST, Jan 27   Anonymous
305 9:53 pm PST, Jan 26   Kristen F. I love listening to progrssive/democratic talk shows, please save the show.
303 7:42 pm PST, Jan 26   Terry Burke
302 4:01 pm PST, Jan 26 Mr. John Colwell Anyone with a slice of independent thought can see the need to have opposing views available. The latest figures on radio political talk shows is 85% Right Wing, and 15% Left Wing. Can anyone say FAIRNESS DOCTRINE?
301 12:37 pm PST, Jan 26   Mary Sartin Without a free and independent media which airs fact vs opinion, this democracy cannot stand.

Return Progressive Talk and Balance to Cincinnati

In the 2006 election a majority of Ohio voters voted for progressive candidates. Cincinnati has a Democratic Mayor and the Hamilton County Commission has a Democratic majority. We want to show that there is support for progressive talk radio in Cincinnati.

We want to see progressive talk radio returned to Cincinnati. And we want to see balanced restored to the public airwaves. Cincinnati is not red, and not blue, it is both - purple. And local talk radio should serve the blue side of the market instead of just the red side.
