Don't Let Wildlife Services Kill Our Wolves

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services may sound harmless, but this secretive wildlife-extermination agency is killing as many as 3 million coyotes, bears, beavers, foxes, birds, wolves and other native animals each year.

But Wildlife Services just keeps on plugging away on its wolf-killing mission. The agency is now seeking to expand its wolf program to Washington state, even as it comes under increasing media scrutiny and is investigated by the USDA Inspector General.

Wildlife Services plans to shoot and trap Washington's wolves in order to appease livestock ranchers -- despite the availability of nonlethal methods that have been proven to work in reducing conflicts between wolves and livestock.

Three out of four Washingtonians want to see healthy wolf populations restored to their state. Under no circumstances should Wildlife Services be in charge of any part of wolf management.

Please act now to urge the USDA to protect Washington's recovering wolf populations and rein in Wildlife Services.
I am writing in strong support of Alternative 2 in the USDA Wildlife Services' environmental assessment on gray wolf damage management in the state of Washington. This alternative would eliminate USDA's role in wolf management there and best protect wolves and their habitat.

I oppose Wildlife Services' involvement in lethal wolf management for several reasons. For one, the agency lacks a regulatory framework and behaves like a rogue -- out of control and accountable to no one.

Members of Congress are demanding accountability from Wildlife Services, the press is searching for, but not getting, fair answers, and now the USDA Inspector General is investigating the agency for mismanagement.

People are rightly beginning to wonder what circumstances could ever possibly warrant killing so many coyotes, bears, beavers, foxes, birds and gray wolves -- as many as 3 million native animals and pets every year.

Wildlife Services should not be trusted to carry out wildlife management.

Wildlife Services' involvement in wolf control, both in Alternatives 1 and 3, would increase the number of wolves killed in the state. And under these proposed alternatives more wolves would be radio-collared. Further, traps and snares for wolves would jeopardize other imperiled wildlife in Washington, including lynx and grizzly bears. This is an unacceptable risk.

Please consider the wellbeing of our ecosystems, which depend so heavily on the health of wolf populations. Don't let Wildlife Services kill Washington's wolves.

Sincerely,
