Concerns Regarding Larger Classes

Target: Dr. F. Javier Cevallos, Kutztown University
Sponsor: Missy Coleman, Alexandra Cavallaro, and Aaron Smyk
  • Signatures: 146
  • Goal: 3,000
  • Deadline: 1-1-2007
Dr. F. Javier Cevallos,

We, The Undersigned, are asking for one thing: we request an opportunity to discuss our concerns related to the implementation of larger classrooms at Kutztown University in an open forum with you and the rest of the administration. We are worried about the consequences these larger classes will have for our education, for our development as individuals, and for valuable relationships between students and faculty: the very qualities that drew us to this institution and, we hope, will continue to draw new students in the years to come.

The Vision Statement of Kutztown University declares that we will, “enhance communication with all stakeholders”, and for this reason, we are coming to you. We are all stakeholders in the success of this learning community, so we ask you to let us share in the discourse concerning that community’s future. We want to understand your position, and we want you to understand ours. Give us the chance to create unity, not division, between students and leadership at this institution. Please join us in an open forum to discuss the Academic Forum.

    Sincerely, The Undersigned.

I would hate to see that I made the wrong decision by choosing KU for their small, personal class sizes, and on campus laboratory school, if the class sizes continue to grow. How can anyone, genious or not, learn mathmatics in a lecture hall class with a minimum of 70 seats??? NO WAY I'M DOING IT!

114 8:48 am PST, Dec 5   Jason Schiavone Kutztown has to understand that the more kids they let in, the lower the quality of education will be. Expensive buildings with huge class rooms just isn't the answer. They should fix up the buildings they have now and try to lower class room sizes. Now that would be money well spent. If your going to make new buildings at least keep the class room sizes to around 20-30 kids. Kutztown is a great school but if this keeps up, in time no one will want to go to school here.
113 8:12 am PST, Dec 5   Anonymous Kutztown University is known for having the small classrooms where you can get to know your professors if you need help. When I first heard about the forum I was told that it was just a 24 hr study area with a food court. Then all of the sudden it has huge rooms where we are just going to be lectured never really know who our professor is or if they really care about each of their students. So many of us have come here because of the small classrooms now it's being taken away from us.
112 8:13 pm PST, Dec 4 Ms. Andrea Haas I came to kutztown because of the small size. I started in small classes but they just gre and grew. Yes, the area is growing, but the AF is just too much. Teachers will no longer be able to teach as they would like and students dont want to feel like just a number because the prf can not take the time to get to know them.
111 8:14 pm PST, Dec 3 Ms. Amanda Green Small class sizes and the subsequent close professor-student relationships have been some of the best aspects of my experience here at Kutztown. I don't know how I could recommend this university to others if they were taken away. Please consider the needs of the individual students when devising new classroom buildings and hiring or dismissing staff.
110 10:38 pm PST, Dec 2 Ms. Lauren Cline Fix what we already have so that everyone is getting a quility education and then build new. But don't forget to listen to use, the students, the ones from who you get the money to build, or else we might go else where and then how will you pay to keep the lights on?
