Save Our Salmon: Remove Four Snake River Dams

Target: President George Bush
Sponsor: American Rivers / Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition
  • Signatures: 9,105
  • Goal: 8,000
  • Deadline: 4-12-2005
Swimming thousands of miles and climbing mountains en route to their natal streams, the epic wild salmon are a wonder of Nature. Now, because of four dams on the Lower Snake River, these Pacific Northwest fish are in danger of extinction and President Bush's policies are keeping salmon in hot water. In fact, this month the Snake River was listed as America's third most endangered river.

Over $3.5 billion has been spent on failed salmon recovery measures -- like trucking salmon around dams -- but biologists agree that removal of the four lower Snake River dams is the best recovery measure for salmon.

This Earth Day, we have a window of opportunity to encourage President Bush to do the right thing -- remove the four lower Snake River dams and save wild salmon from extinction. Take Action TODAY and send a letter to President Bush encouraging him to help restore wild salmon populations.

9,106 8:36 pm PST, Dec 10 Mr. Drew Caughlin Idaho United States Wild salmon belong to everyone and ultimately are worth more than the power or shipping benefits. These four dams are prime examples of lack of long term planning. The jobs and tax revenues provided by a renewed Salmon industry would out-weigh any losses from removal. The endangered species act is the law and I support any attempt to follow it.
9,105 9:17 am PST, Nov 18 Mr. Fredy Tu California United States Salmon populations have declined nearly 90 percent in the last century. Human interactions and environmental problems are the leading cause, in order to save the salmon, action must be taken. Removing the dams will allow salmon to freely spawn.

9,101 4:32 pm PST, Feb 12   Kevin Korasick Idaho United States It is imperative to save our wild stock of salmon while its numbers are still available. Genetic variabilty is the main goal to the immediate restoration of our final stock of salmon. Free flowing rivers create a network of integrated ecosystems dependent on the natural disturbances radiating from the river, to the riparian system and outward.

The issues you face are important as are the ones that sound not to be so. please pay attention to what the scientists are saying they know what they are talking about. Thank you for listening Free flowing rivers are a natural fact. Without them the earth will suffer. When the earth suffers it makes humans suffer in more ways that are evident to us now.

9,092 5:45 pm PDT, Jun 27 Ms. Brenda Schenk Washington United States Because they are here for a reason. They deserve to live long and prosper as a species. Because I don't believe we should have the right to endanger more species, haven't we done enough damage to our world already? Why make it worse? Our world seems to be going from the natural way of life to a commercial one. We've lost touch with the importance of respect for life and replaced it with a lust for profit. This has to change.

Save Our Salmon: Remove Four Snake River Dams

Dear President Bush:

The Snake and Columbia rivers are a national treasure, and the salmon of these rivers have fed Native Americans for thousands of years. When Lewis and Clark traveled to the Pacific Northwest, wild salmon numbered in the tens of millions. But today, the Snake River is one of America's most endangered rivers, and wild salmon are on the brink of extinction.

So far, your administration has failed to implement existing salmon restoration measures while simultaneously disabling fundamental laws and treaties. A federal court judge recently ordered your agencies to rewrite the Federal Salmon Plan, finding your current plan insufficient and illegal. Meanwhile, your administration's operation of the four dams on the lower Snake River caused violations of Clean Water Act standards for 63 consecutive days this summer, rendering the river lethal for salmon.

Billions of dollars have been squandered on futile efforts such as trucking young salmon around the dams. With the infrastructure and enforcement of their protection deteriorating, the salmon are in trouble.

I call on you to include removal of the four lower Snake River dams as a mandatory recovery action in your new Federal Salmon Plan. Please include my letter in the formal comment period during your re-write of the Federal Salmon Plan; i.e., FCRPS Biological Opinion. Please let me know your position on this important issue.
