Rein In the Credit Card Banks Now!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Your complaints over interest rate hikes, ridiculous new fees and higher minimum payments were heard loud and clear! The House just froze rate hikes on your credit card balances, and gave you new protections starting Dec. 1 – just in time for the holidays.

Now we need the Senate to hear us and do the same! Send a message to your Senators right now and tell them you can't afford to wait for a February law to stop the credit card companies' abusive tactics. (If you were recently hit with a rate hike or fee, let your Senators know in the space below).

The card companies are taking advantage of the delay to hike interest rates on good customers, and the longer Congress waits, the more time the banks have to ding our wallets with another round of tricks and fees.

Send a message to your Senators to put credit card reforms in place NOW – we can't afford to wait any longer!

This fast moving bill to stop the retroactive rate increases on your credit card balance was stopped in the Senate by a single lawmaker – even as thousands of people like you spoke out in support. Senator Thad Corchran of Mississippi blocked the bill's movement to the Senate floor for a vote. It didn't even get a debate in open session, after passing the House by large, bipartisan margins.

But thank you for your interest! We don't have to rely on Congress to stop the banks – help send a strong message directly to the credit card companies!

Subject: Implement credit card reform NOW

Dear Senator [Last Name],

American consumers need financial relief this holiday season, especially from abusive credit card company tactics designed to wring every last cent from us before the Credit CARD Reform Act goes into effect next February.

I'm urging you to immediately pass the Expedited CARD Reform for Consumers Act of 2009 (S 1833, HR 3639) so we can start getting the protections Congress already approved at a time we need them the most -- the holiday season.

DELL doubled my interest rate and I vow to never buy another DELL computer. Bank of America also. Citibank also, but we worked out a deal. My bank PNC Bank, has hit me with numerous over drawn fees, by allowing debit purchases when there was no balance in the account. That never happened before. Then they hit you w/overdrawn fees, when I realized what was happening, I was told they were doing me a favor I never ask them to opt me in for this feature.

Not just a rate hike, but a steady reduction of credit limit as I have regularly paid down my balances! I normally wouldn't mind it, but the corresponding DING to the credit-balance ratio also greatly affect the credit score -- which is totally not fair! I have responsibly been paying down balances, more than minimums due, but the reduction of the limit continues, when the score should reflect a better credit standing!

Thank you for taking the time. These banks are criminal's, really. They don't care about anything, but the dollar. Maybe someone can stand up and make them play fairly.

I have seen paycheck companies charging interest as high as 800%. We have to do something to help the consumer, and we need to do it now!
