Protect Our Coasts: No More Offshore Oil Drilling!

Target: John McCain and Barack Obama
Sponsored by: Care2.com

"Drill, baby, drill!" Michael Steele, RNC, Sept. 3, 2008

We can't drill our way to energy independence. Our federal Energy Information Administration has even reported that offshore drilling will have little effect on oil and gas production or on prices before 2030 (read report). Meanwhile, Big Oil continues to swim in record profits, the U.S. is the top global warming polluter in the world, and the world's ice mass and glaciers are retreating at a dramatic pace.

America must not compromise its energy security or its fragile natural resources. We need a new vision for the future that will end our current energy dilemma and addiction to oil. Our leadership must focus on reducing our need for oil – which is where real national energy security lies – not on more drilling, more carbon emissions, more barge and tanker traffic, more accidental oil spills.

For eight years, the current administration has led America down the path of oil over-dependence – both foreign and domestic. Now it's time to tell John McCain and Barack Obama:

Stand strong against expanded offshore oil drilling. Let's declare true energy independence for America once and for all.

We urge you to take a strong public stand against the expansion of offshore oil drilling. Our focus should be on reducing our need for oil - which is where real national energy security lies - not in more drilling. We can't drill our way to energy independence.

Expanding our offshore drilling, and the inevitable spills that will occur from increased barge and tanker traffic, damages our fragile coastlines and wetlands. Coastal communities pay the price with toxic fumes, inoperable municipal water systems and hopelessly fouled water. Lifting the 27-year old moratorium on offshore oil drilling will place important wildlife areas at risk of irreparable harm for very little gain, and no long-term solution.

America needs a new vision to lift it out of its current dilemma and dependence on oil. We need both long-term solutions that focus on renewable energy and better fuel efficiency, and short-term solutions that oversee the oil markets and hold oil speculators accountable for their shifty deals.
We signed the “Protect Our Coasts: No More Offshore Oil Drilling!” petition!

Offshore drilling is ruining our water and killing our sea creatures. Its also giving us more oil that we dont need. Also more money spent towards getting the oil, then what we are spending to get foriegn oil

No off shore drilling at all would be great.

I've seen the damage done by oil spills & the limits the oil compainies will go to not have to clean up after themselves & their mistakes, and the millions of dollars they will spend to obstruct justice & cloud the issues. The damage done can not be replaced or removed, it will be there for lifetimes. No more greed for $, ther has got to be a better way..., alternatives to fossil fuels... PLEASE

It will hardly put a dent in our reliance on foreign oil. We need to focus our resources on clean alternative energy sources. Offshore drilling is a shortsighted solution, which will only exacerbate our environmental crisis, and pull resources from finding a viable long-term solution to our energy crisis.

Offshore drilling is something our country should not even consider. I am a resident of Humboldt County and I strongly oppose the current proposal of offshore drilling in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt Counties. I have seen what oil can do to Nature's Beauty. I was a Sustainability Intern at Golden Gate National Recreation Area when the Cosco Busan Oil Spill occurred. I saw the damage and destruction that the oil spill did to our beaches and wildlife. It took months and months to clean it up... and did we ever really clean up all of it? I find the Northern California Coast to be one of the most beautiful and magical places in our United States. Let's really think about what we are considering doing and what we will be leaving our children and our grandchildren. I want future generations everywhere to be able to go out to the coast and see a sunset-- without a bunch of oil rigs! It's not worth it- let's find alternatives using clean energy. We have the ability. I strongly encourage you to say NO to lifting the ban on offshore drilling.

There is no way anyone can say this is a clean process. Drilling for oil is dirty. Somewhere nearby, on shore, it has to be transferred to other forms of transportaion and during this process, spills occur. There's not one location where off shore drilling takes place that the coastline is not affected in negative ways.

We do not need the extra drilling when we can increase alternative sources and supply our energy needs. If that does not supply enough oil then we can pump more oil from the established wells.

We need to find alternative sources for energy. I was raised in Florida and the beaches and water are beautiful. Let us keep it that way for our children and future generations.

Drilling offshore is not the answer. Why use up every last bit of our natural resources and risk ruining our fragile environment when alternative fuel is the solution?! Stay away from my beach!

Increased offshore drilling is not the answer, those efforts would be better spent developing alternative energy sources. We don't need to sustain or placate big oil by endangering the environment. That is not acceptable!
