The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has shut down Parliament until January 26 in a manipulative attempt to avoid a no-confidence vote. Harper and his conservative cohorts have gotten out of sticky situations before--it's time to call them out on their undemocratic actions.
The proroguing of Parliament undermines the parliamentary democracy and can cause irrevocable damage to the Canadian system of government. Dozens of pieces of legislation will die, parliamentary committees can dissolve, and Harper may gain enough leverage to force a high-stakes vote in the House of Commons. Harper is failing his duty to uphold the Canadian constitution.
Canadians deserve a fair, accountable government. Send a message that we will not stand for this behavior: authoritarian practices will not be tolerated in Canada's democratic government. Tell the Prime Minister to open Parliament and uphold his democratic responsibility to Canada.
Dear Prime Minister Harper,
The proroguing of Parliament undermines parliamentary democracy and I urge you to honor your constitutional duty to Canada and open Parliament.
Canadians deserve a fair, accountable government: silencing parliament is an authoritarian action. As Prime Minister, you have a responsibility to honor Canadian citizens and uphold the Canadian system of government.
[your comments]
Open parliament and allow the Canadian democracy to justly fulfill the needs of its people.
Sincerely,
