They are my family and a walk in the park or on the beach is something I would never do without them, as I would not enjoy spending my time alone instead of with my girls. | |
| 1,543 | 9:48 am PDT, Jul 3 | Lisa Wilson | Hesperia | California | Our rights are slowly being taken by a few who have power and enough is enough! Its time we took back our beaches and national parks so we can have fun in them. YES my house is clean and they are all healthy and well cared for! | Dogs and horses, they are God's creatures and it is God's land. If you are responsible there should be NO reason your animals cannot visit the beautiful places God has created for all of us! | 1,538 | 7:16 pm PST, Jan 21 | Mrs. | Anonymous | Atherton | California | I just moved to Atherton from San Francisco & Santa Barbara. There are very limited areas to have my dog off leash. There should be larger areas with longer times available for the off leash dog parks I've found in the area. Along with a large hiking area for dogs off leash. | 1 dog 1 cat | yes! |
| 1,537 | 1:53 pm PST, Jan 21 | Ms. | Anonymous | san mateo | California | My dog loves to be outdoors, playing around and getting dirty....He needs more places to be able to do that! Plus he loves to play with other dogs and make new friends! | 1 dog and 3 cats | So that he can get fresh air and explore new places. He loves to be All Natural. |

| 1,535 | 1:36 pm PST, Jan 11 | Anonymous | San Mateo | California | I have a dog and he needs to be able to get out in the world and be a good citizen and be ale to have fun outside of his own home. They need this to be well rounded dogs. | 1 dog, 4 cats and one hamster. | because my taxes support public parks and beaches. | |
| 1,534 | 5:36 pm PDT, Oct 1 | Mrs. | Deborah Carsey | Millbrae | California | As a new dog owner I'm shocked that there there are so few places I can take my dog even though I live next to an extensive trail system. There is simply no reason not to allow leashed dogs in appropriate public parks. If there are liabilities let them to be the dog owner and not to the county. | I have 3 guinea pigs and a dog | We have no family or friends who are near and after five years living in the bay area we got our first dog last month. I'm very disappointed to find so few places that are close where my I can take my 'family'. I naturally assumed that living in the most wonderful outdoorsy county in the country that there would be few places where my dog and I wouldn't be welcomed. |
| 1,533 | 10:01 am PDT, Sep 4 | Mr. | Michael Hirabayashi | Foster City | California | increasing the number of designated dog-friendly venues reduces the incidence of negative interaction with non-dog-owners in non-dog-friendly areas. | One dog. | because my taxes support public parks and beaches too. |
| 1,532 | 2:04 pm PDT, Jul 12 | Don McKeever | San Mateo | California | Dogs that can be off leash legally have a place to poop besides the neighbors lawn. My only gripe is against the totally self entitled people who allow their dogs to run about off leash in inapproprriate places. | one golden retriever | because he accompanies me everywhere that is legal. | |
| 1,530 | 11:18 am PDT, Jun 21 | Dr. | Anonymous | San Francisco | California | I believe that we as dog owning taxpayers should have the right to utilize our beaches in the company of our dogs. | I have 2 wonderfully behaved dogs and I am a responsible pet owner. | I want my dog with me when I go the parks and beaches because they are part of my family. |
| 1,529 | 6:33 pm PDT, Jun 16 | Ms. | Anonymous | los molinos | California | I have both horses and dogs and they both love to go the beach, I think that I should have the right to visit our beaches as well as anyone else is. | I have 5 dogs and three horses | Because they love the beach also, i however feel different than that other person who says horse and dog poop are the same they are not a dog is carnivious and a horse is a grass eater. very differnt in how the dung breaks down. Riding my horse on the beach is my right and not someone elses, if they cannot control their horse than maybe they should not ride. |
| 1,528 | 10:20 am PDT, Jun 14 | matt mcwright | Emerald Hill | California | I own a dog and feel dog friendly parks are underrepresented in SM county. | 1 | Very much so--he's well behaved and trustworthy! | |
| 1,527 | 11:07 am PDT, May 19 | Ms. | Stephanie Sharron | Palo Alto | California | I care about the residents of this community and their dogs. Please provide access to well-maintained parks for dogs. Having these facilities ensures that dogs have a clean, safe place to play and become well socialized. This benefits both dog owners and non-dog owners alike. Surrounding commnities have already made this part of their communities. Menlo Park's Nealon Park is a good example of how Park Dog Hours can work. Please consider joining those communities that care about the care and safety of families and their dogs. It is irresponsible not to have a place for so many of your residents to bring their dogs to exercise in the safety of an enclosed, safe area. | 1 | Yes |
| 1,526 | 4:07 pm PDT, May 9 | Anonymous | Redwood City | California | I have a dog and there are very few places in San Mateo county where we can go. Off leash is almost non-existent, with the exception of one very poorly kept park that is filled with professional dog walkers. | 1 dog | Yes, definitely | |
| 1,525 | 1:40 pm PDT, May 1 | Anonymous | San Mateo | California | I believe there should be more NICE GRASSY dog friendly places | 1 | Absolutely, I want my dog to be able to run and play freely! | |
| 1,524 | 12:25 pm PDT, May 1 | Anonymous | United States | I support it. | Cats. | Occasionally. | ||
| 1,523 | 12:38 pm PDT, Apr 16 | Anonymous | san mateo | California | Dog parks are a benefit to pets and owners,as well as the counnty because they provide a safe place for animals to play and socialize. | 1 dog, 1 cat | yes | |
| 1,522 | 11:36 am PDT, Apr 6 | Anonymous | San Carlos | California | My dogs should be able to go any where I go..They are a hugh part of my family. | I have 2 mini Aussie's! | They love water, hikes and they are very good with other dogs & people. | |
| 1,521 | 12:36 pm PDT, Apr 1 | Anonymous | Saratoga | California | I understand when and why the rules for leashing dogs on trails. However, I don't understand why dog owners cannot use lines longer than 6 feet such as flexi-leads. If the owner can competently use a flexi-lead, then there does not exist any reason for not being able to use it. I'm happy to clean up dog poop in any area near a garbage can. However, when I'm miles out in nowhere, I won't until horse owners also pick up, and carry for miles, all the horse sh*%(*&^% they leave all over the trails. And please, let me never again have to hear how horse sh*(*&^ is somehow more pleasant and "smells better" than dog poop - jeez give me a break! Has anyone hiked the beaches in Half Moon Bay where at times the sand is covered in horse crap? It gross and it's disgusting. Meanwhile, us dog owners are keeping our dog poops cleaned up in Half Moon Bay. As a horse owner myself, I know that comparisons of animal poop on beaches and trails is ridiculous. On the trails I would much rather pass a dog than a horse or mule. Horses are so dangerous to ride out on the trails and one always has to be so careful to not "spook" a horse. Otherwise, the horse-rider's life is put in jeapordy. When riding horses out on the trails, it is not a question of if one will be injured, but when. Dogs may annoy someone on occassion, but they don't endanger the lives of, or cause injury, to the owners or other trail users. Riding horses is one of the most dangerous activities there is in terms of injury. I think the only other activity more dangerous is bicycle riding according to the insurance industry. So by comparison, dogs might sometimes cause a nuisance, but horses cause injury and death. There is nothing wrong with having dogs on trails and beaches. And by all means, take your life in your own hands and ride horses on the trails. But, don't blame others when you get hurt if your horse bucks, rears, spooks, bolts, takes off with you, or goes over cliff. | 3 dogs. 1 horse. | It would be nice to have more off-leash trails and places with some real space. One off-leash beach would be a good idea. With all the miles of beaches along the coast, would it be so terrible to have just one off-leash beach? | |
| 1,520 | 9:18 am PDT, Mar 26 | Ms. | Ginger Geronimo | Birmingham | Alabama | I think it's a great idea. | I have a cat. | If I had a dog or dogs, I'm sure I would. |
| 1,519 | 11:58 am PDT, Mar 17 | Jerry Turin | Scotts Valley | California | It's an outrage that dogs are allowed on so few hiking trails and beaches. So long as they are cleaned up after, and are on leash (particularly on trails) they are a net plus to the experience. | 1 dog | Absolutely. I also reject out of hand any suggestion they are a nuisance to other users (providing they are cleaned up for and on leash on trails). Anyone who can't walk past a leashed pet should probably just stay home in a safe, sterile bubble enclosure anyway. And the suggestion that dogs on trails will keep wildlife away more than humans themselves? Please. | |
| 1,518 | 1:35 pm PDT, Mar 13 | Ms. | Carine O'Neil | San Mateo | California | It seems downright un-natural to not have natural trails where both humans and their controlled dogs can enjoy a good, healthy, and interesting hike together. When my dog is off-leash, he gets a lot more exercise, he's happier, he gets to smell and pee as much as he wants without my having to stop and wait every few steps for him to do his dog stuff, and it's easier on the arm and back injuries I have. | 1 dog | I don't plan to have kids and my dog is so extraordinarily sensitive, gentle, affectionate, smart, and expressive that he is possibly more like family to me than other dogs are to lot of other people. He literally behaves and minds verbal commands better than most children. I am disabled, but walking is one of the only forms of exercise I can still do, and my open schedule allows me to spend almost all my time with my dog. Hiking together through a variety of natural surroundings would be very beneficial for the mental and physical health of us both. However, the only current legal location nearby for taking dogs off-leash is the flat, treeless/partially paved, small and fairly boring dog park by the bay. |
| 1,517 | 9:56 am PDT, Mar 12 | Mr. | Mario Busalacchi | San Carlos | California | I want my dog, and ,y soon to be dogs, to enjoy outdoors. I want them to be able to run around freely, it gives them more of a work out. | I have on dog right now. | I do want my dog with me, I consider him part of the family. I have already taken him to the beaches and he loves it. I also know I have full control of him off leash and if I felt otherwise I would put him back on leash. |
| 1,516 | 10:31 am PST, Mar 8 | Ms. | Krista Dake | Portola Valley | California | I want my dogs to enjoy the outdoors with me. | I have 3 small dogs. | I spend my weekends with my dogs so I want them with me when I enjoy the outdoors. |
| 1,515 | 2:36 pm PST, Feb 21 | Ms. | Anonymous | Pacifica | California | I have a puppy who loves to get out and make firends, but with few places to go to. | One Puppy and planning to get another one. | because its just so much fun to have one of my bests friends with me to enjoy the sun all day with me. |
| 1,514 | 10:17 am PST, Feb 19 | Anonymous | San Mateo | California | I am a dog owner and tax payer in San Mateo County. | 2 | I want my dog(s) with me when I go the parks and beaches. | |
| 1,513 | 5:54 pm PST, Feb 2 | Ms. | Whitney Harris | Redwood City | California | I love animals and dogs should have an adventurous place to roam besides a small backyard | three other pets | It is more fun to have a loyal companion. Also, dogs want to have tons of fun, too!! |

| 1,508 | 7:50 pm PST, Dec 25 | Anonymous | san carlos | California | dogs are great | 1 | because they are the best companions | |
| 1,507 | 4:08 pm PST, Dec 23 | polly gloudemans | san mateo | California | Responsibilities of pets must be on the owner not restricting animals they should have the right to be free | I have 3 furry kids and they are my joy in life | I go where they can be free with me especially the beaches. | |
| 1,506 | 9:16 am PST, Dec 23 | Mrs. | Cindy Jarvis | Redwood City | California | I feel that the whole state of California is in need of more off leash dog friendly parks! | 1 dog and a cat | Our dog is our child. She goes EVERYWHERE she is allowed to go with us. We even bought an RV and call it the dog house because there are so many hotels that are not dog friendly. |
| 1,505 | 10:14 pm PST, Dec 13 | Pam Fena | Millbrae | California | I feel it is very important for dogs to be able to run off leash. Well exercised dogs are happier, healthier and less likely to have behavioral issues. It is also important for dogs to be socialized and it is less confrontational if they are off leash and not confined to a fenced in dog park or back yard. | 1 dog and 3 cats | because he is part of the family and we like to take him everywhere with us. | |
| 1,504 | 9:42 pm PST, Nov 26 | Karen Vitulano | Daly City | California | We need more dog-friendly places in San Mateo county | 1 dog | because its more fun that way | |

| 1,502 | 12:04 am PST, Nov 20 | Anonymous | San Jose | California | I am a responsible owner who would like more off-leash areas to exercise my dog that I would also enjoy walking. | 1 dog | I drive an hour to get to dog beaches! My dog is a more social and better dog because of constant positive socialization from off-leash beaches. | |
| 1,501 | 2:50 pm PDT, Oct 25 | jill hansen | Foster City | California | I miss so much a place to walk freely with my dogs in grass and trees. It important to me in my life to be able to have this experience without restraints. | 2 young labradors | Absolutely |
Dedicate "Dog Friendly" Parks and Beaches in San Mateo County, California
In the San Jose Bay Area, a huge population exists of those who are wage earning, tax-paying homeowners who have families and pets. Pets are considered in America to be "one of the family" and deserving to spend recreational time with their owners. A few hours at the beach, a small hike in the mountains or a jog in the park are typical recreational activities, which Californians want to enjoy with their families, friends and pets.
In addition, the baby-boomer generation will begin retirement in the near future and subsequently will be planning to travel. California is a highlighted state for outdoors recreation, and many scenic trips will planned to the San Jose Bay Area. They will, of course, plan to include their families and pets on these long-distance vacations. Unfortunately, many tourists will become discouraged about traveling to the parks and coast of San Mateo by the current "dog ban" and consequently will choose other areas that are more friendly and accommodating to visit.
Based upon pet population in the San Jose and San Francisco Bay Areas, a proportional amount of "dog friendly" beaches and trails need to be reserved. By implementing this extremely simple and inexpensive strategy, discrimination against pets and their owners will end, and the protected environment of the parks will not be lost.
We thank the Commission for recognizing the need to amend the current state park laws by dedicating a proportional amount of "dog friendly" parks and beaches in the San Mateo Area.
