1,526 4:07 pm PDT, May 9 Anonymous Redwood City California I have a dog and there are very few places in San Mateo county where we can go. Off leash is almost non-existent, with the exception of one very poorly kept park that is filled with professional dog walkers. 1 dog Yes, definitely
1,525 1:40 pm PDT, May 1 Anonymous San Mateo California I believe there should be more NICE GRASSY dog friendly places 1 Absolutely, I want my dog to be able to run and play freely!
1,524 12:25 pm PDT, May 1 Anonymous United States   I support it. Cats. Occasionally.
1,523 12:38 pm PDT, Apr 16 Anonymous san mateo California Dog parks are a benefit to pets and owners,as well as the counnty because they provide a safe place for animals to play and socialize. 1 dog, 1 cat yes
1,522 11:36 am PDT, Apr 6 Anonymous San Carlos California My dogs should be able to go any where I go..They are a hugh part of my family. I have 2 mini Aussie's! They love water, hikes and they are very good with other dogs & people.
1,521 12:36 pm PDT, Apr 1 Anonymous Saratoga California I understand when and why the rules for leashing dogs on trails. However, I don't understand why dog owners cannot use lines longer than 6 feet such as flexi-leads. If the owner can competently use a flexi-lead, then there does not exist any reason for not being able to use it. I'm happy to clean up dog poop in any area near a garbage can. However, when I'm miles out in nowhere, I won't until horse owners also pick up, and carry for miles, all the horse sh*%(*&^% they leave all over the trails. And please, let me never again have to hear how horse sh*(*&^ is somehow more pleasant and "smells better" than dog poop - jeez give me a break! Has anyone hiked the beaches in Half Moon Bay where at times the sand is covered in horse crap? It gross and it's disgusting. Meanwhile, us dog owners are keeping our dog poops cleaned up in Half Moon Bay. As a horse owner myself, I know that comparisons of animal poop on beaches and trails is ridiculous. On the trails I would much rather pass a dog than a horse or mule. Horses are so dangerous to ride out on the trails and one always has to be so careful to not "spook" a horse. Otherwise, the horse-rider's life is put in jeapordy. When riding horses out on the trails, it is not a question of if one will be injured, but when. Dogs may annoy someone on occassion, but they don't endanger the lives of, or cause injury, to the owners or other trail users. Riding horses is one of the most dangerous activities there is in terms of injury. I think the only other activity more dangerous is bicycle riding according to the insurance industry. So by comparison, dogs might sometimes cause a nuisance, but horses cause injury and death. There is nothing wrong with having dogs on trails and beaches. And by all means, take your life in your own hands and ride horses on the trails. But, don't blame others when you get hurt if your horse bucks, rears, spooks, bolts, takes off with you, or goes over cliff. 3 dogs. 1 horse. It would be nice to have more off-leash trails and places with some real space. One off-leash beach would be a good idea. With all the miles of beaches along the coast, would it be so terrible to have just one off-leash beach?
1,520 9:18 am PDT, Mar 26 Ginger Geronimo Birmingham Alabama I think it's a great idea. I have a cat. If I had a dog or dogs, I'm sure I would.
1,519 11:58 am PDT, Mar 17 Jerry Turin Scotts Valley California It's an outrage that dogs are allowed on so few hiking trails and beaches. So long as they are cleaned up after, and are on leash (particularly on trails) they are a net plus to the experience. 1 dog Absolutely. I also reject out of hand any suggestion they are a nuisance to other users (providing they are cleaned up for and on leash on trails). Anyone who can't walk past a leashed pet should probably just stay home in a safe, sterile bubble enclosure anyway. And the suggestion that dogs on trails will keep wildlife away more than humans themselves? Please.
1,518 1:35 pm PDT, Mar 13 Carine O'Neil San Mateo California It seems downright un-natural to not have natural trails where both humans and their controlled dogs can enjoy a good, healthy, and interesting hike together. When my dog is off-leash, he gets a lot more exercise, he's happier, he gets to smell and pee as much as he wants without my having to stop and wait every few steps for him to do his dog stuff, and it's easier on the arm and back injuries I have. 1 dog I don't plan to have kids and my dog is so extraordinarily sensitive, gentle, affectionate, smart, and expressive that he is possibly more like family to me than other dogs are to lot of other people. He literally behaves and minds verbal commands better than most children. I am disabled, but walking is one of the only forms of exercise I can still do, and my open schedule allows me to spend almost all my time with my dog. Hiking together through a variety of natural surroundings would be very beneficial for the mental and physical health of us both. However, the only current legal location nearby for taking dogs off-leash is the flat, treeless/partially paved, small and fairly boring dog park by the bay.
1,517 9:56 am PDT, Mar 12 Mario Busalacchi San Carlos California I want my dog, and ,y soon to be dogs, to enjoy outdoors. I want them to be able to run around freely, it gives them more of a work out. I have on dog right now. I do want my dog with me, I consider him part of the family. I have already taken him to the beaches and he loves it. I also know I have full control of him off leash and if I felt otherwise I would put him back on leash.

1,506 9:16 am PST, Dec 23 Cindy Jarvis Redwood City California I feel that the whole state of California is in need of more off leash dog friendly parks! 1 dog and a cat Our dog is our child. She goes EVERYWHERE she is allowed to go with us. We even bought an RV and call it the dog house because there are so many hotels that are not dog friendly.
1,505 10:14 pm PST, Dec 13 Pam Fena Millbrae California I feel it is very important for dogs to be able to run off leash. Well exercised dogs are happier, healthier and less likely to have behavioral issues. It is also important for dogs to be socialized and it is less confrontational if they are off leash and not confined to a fenced in dog park or back yard. 1 dog and 3 cats because he is part of the family and we like to take him everywhere with us.

Dedicate "Dog Friendly" Parks and Beaches in San Mateo County, California

To the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Commision:

In the San Jose Bay Area, a huge population exists of those who are wage earning, tax-paying homeowners who have families and pets. Pets are considered in America to be "one of the family" and deserving to spend recreational time with their owners. A few hours at the beach, a small hike in the mountains or a jog in the park are typical recreational activities, which Californians want to enjoy with their families, friends and pets.

In addition, the baby-boomer generation will begin retirement in the near future and subsequently will be planning to travel. California is a highlighted state for outdoors recreation, and many scenic trips will planned to the San Jose Bay Area. They will, of course, plan to include their families and pets on these long-distance vacations. Unfortunately, many tourists will become discouraged about traveling to the parks and coast of San Mateo by the current "dog ban" and consequently will choose other areas that are more friendly and accommodating to visit.

Based upon pet population in the San Jose and San Francisco Bay Areas, a proportional amount of "dog friendly" beaches and trails need to be reserved. By implementing this extremely simple and inexpensive strategy, discrimination against pets and their owners will end, and the protected environment of the parks will not be lost.

We thank the Commission for recognizing the need to amend the current state park laws by dedicating a proportional amount of "dog friendly" parks and beaches in the San Mateo Area.
