Protecting Children from Gun Violence is Bipartisan

After Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tuscon, Aurora and countless other mass shootings, the killing of 27 people -- 20 of them children -- at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school should be the final straw. We can't let this chance to get assault weapons off the streets slip away.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Machin and conservative commentator Joe Scarborough have both received top marks from the National Rifle Assocation. But now, even they acknowledge that you can believe in freedom and liberty and the second amendment and still think that the sale of military-grade weaponry and high-capacity clips isn't a constitutional right.

Gun control brings out partisan bickering. But to honor the 20 children murdered in Newtown, we need to put the inflammatory rhetoric and cowardly deference to the NRA aside and act to prevent another tragedy.

Tell Congress to put children's safety before political games and partisan squabbling and sensibly regulate the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons.
Dear [Decision Maker],

In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown Connecticut, I ask that you put aside partisanship and work across the aisle to enact some sensible limits on military-grade assault weapons in the United States.

People from both ends of the political spectrum on gun control have expressed dismay and sadness at the tragedy, but also a willingness to work together to keep the most dangerous weapons of choice for mass shootings -- assault weapons with high-capacity magazines -- off the streets.

[Your comments will be added here.]

Regardless of your individual feelings on the second amendment, I think we can all agree that keeping these dangerous assault weapons out of killers' hands does not infringe on basic liberty and freedoms and that there is no constitutional right to own a such a weapon.

Please, work across the aisle to prevent another tragedy by getting assault weapons off the streets.
