Don't Believe the Drilling Hype!

Target: U.S. Congress, U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: The Wilderness Society
"Do something about sky-rocketing gas prices!"

That's the message members of Congress are hearing from their constituents - and understandably so. But under pressure to help consumers, many of our elected officials are wrongly giving in to the oil and gas industry's multi-million dollar lobbying campaign to open protected areas to drilling.

Though the media has focused on offshore drilling, the threat to our onshore public lands is also graver than ever. Opening protected public lands to drilling won't lower gas prices, but it will put our cherished lands at risk.

In addition to our precious coastal habitats, places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and Utah's Red Rock wilderness could soon be within the sights of the energy industry. Reckless drilling will do nothing but provide handouts to oil and gas companies while discouraging investment in clean energy technologies.

That's why we need your petition signature today. Tell your members of Congress to stand firm against voting for an energy policy based on panic.

Dear Decision Maker,

The high energy prices and impacts to our economy and environment from our fossil-fuel-dependent energy policy are hurting all Americans. Please don't rush to drill in protected lands and waters.

Instead, please continue the moratorium on new offshore drilling that has been endorsed by Republican and Democratic administrations and congressional leaders for four decades. Take a stand for your voters by supporting legislation that will give Americans relief and kick-start the new energy economy.

Instead of destroying our natural resources, we should be investing our money & time in alternate fuel technology.

It's time America stopped falling for the lies of both the oil and gas industries. Failing to do so means we're okay with handing them whatever they want despite the potential for irreversible damage--and this is totally not acceptable.

We can't kick this addiction by getting our drugs (ie fossil fuels) from another dealer (ie drilling source). There's so many options out there, so many other sources of energy that won't hurt us long term; don't make it easy for us to keep getting our fix!
