Tell the Navy to Protect Whales from Deadly Sonar and Explosives!

The Navy wants to conduct training and testing with sonar and explosives that could kill more than 1,000 whales and other marine mammals over the next five years. Mid-frequency sonar will bombard whales with noise so intense that it can cause their internal organs to hemorrhage; high-powered explosives detonated by Navy ships have the potential to fatally injure lungs and other organs. There will be more than 5,000 cases of serious injury and literally millions of incidents in which marine mammals are harassed or harmed. And these numbers come from the Navy itself!

Yet the Navy refuses to put common-sense precautions in place that would protect whales during routine training -- even though taking such steps would in no way compromise our national security. For example, the Navy could avoid key habitats where whales are known to migrate and raise their young.

Make your voice heard immediately. Sign the petition to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, calling on him to put safeguards in place that will save whales from the deadly impact of the Navy's sonar and explosives!
Dear Secretary Mabus,

I am shocked that the Navy is prepared to inflict far-reaching harm on whales and other marine mammals during your proposed training and testing with sonar and explosives over the next five years. The Navy’s own damage estimates are appalling; more than 1,000 deaths, thousands of serious injuries and nearly five million instances of temporary hearing loss.

Taking such a staggering toll is unconscionable and unacceptable -- especially because your plan fails to adopt common-sense measures that would dramatically reduce the risk to whales, without compromising military readiness. Most importantly, I call on you to put areas with high concentrations of marine mammals off limits to sonar and explosives.

I urge you to change course at once and begin safeguarding marine mammals during routine naval training. Thousands of these magnificent animals should not have to suffer and die for military practice.
