| 2,814 | 11:15 pm PDT, Jul 2 | Andrew C. | Austin | Texas | I just started MMT 3 days ago. I had previously been on suboxone for 2 years. I am an IV heroin user and these drugs have saved my life. I got on suboxone due to the hysteria over methadone since parents were paying for treatment at the time and would not pay for methadone. Due to lingering problems and an ability to pay for my own treatment I have been able to get on methadone. In only 3 days I have noticed some of the issues I had while on suboxone are gone, but even with these great results I am scared to tell my family about the switch due to all the misinformation out there about methadone. I wish I could It makes something that is a great thing feel dirty. I am sick of hearing that methadone is just switching one high for another. My clinic is within walking distance of my house and it has been a blessing to have to get up in the morning to go get my dose, but I realize this is not the case for most. I think that methadone should be made accessible to any addict and TRUE information about methadone given to the public. | |

| 2,811 | 8:52 pm PDT, Jun 30 | Ms. | Carrie Ann Lincoln | FeedingHills | Massachusetts | -We all seem to fall in a hole at least once in our lives. It's the lucky ones that have "HELP" climbing out. I am a Methadone Treatment Patient. And I Thank God Everyday, that there was "HELP" for ME! I tryed for many years to help myself in all sorts of different ways. I ALWAYS FAILED!!! Nothing seemed to work, until I sought Help through a Local Methadone Clinic. I Beleieve I Would Not be Clean, Clear & Sober w/out this Program. I'm also 5months Pregnant. ☼ I Would of NEVER been able to Protect my Unborn Baby w/ any Other Treatment Available. Methadone Treatment has Not Only Saved My LIFE, But Also Saved my Unborn Child's as Well. ☼ Even if it just Worked for Me, isn't my life worth something? ☼ I leave you w/ this Thought..."WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU OR A LOVED ONE?" "WOULDN'T YOU WANT THERE TO BE RESOURCES THAT WORKED FOR YOU?" To Whom Ever may be Blessed for such Treatment Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. ~*Sincerly, Saved with a SECOND CHANCE,Carre*~ |
| 2,810 | 12:59 pm PDT, Jun 30 | Mrs. | Anonymous | Rock Hill | South Carolina | I came into the program in early April. The methadone does help when you are coming off of 8mg of dillaudid, taking six to eight per day. My husband and I came into the methadone treatment program together (we both had the same problem) and it has been a godsend. I wish the program was not so expensive. Also, my husband and I know about suboxone. We'd like to take it, but it is just as expensive. Anyways, for today, methadone is keeping us away from the really hard stuff. Our lives have more meaning, my husband finally has a job, and we actually act like normal people. And that's all that matters. |
| 2,809 | 5:19 pm PDT, Jun 29 | Mrs. | Anonymous | Acworth | Georgia | I have been on methadone for the past 9 months. It has saved my life. I had almost given up hope of ever being able to stay clean after abusing pain medications for the past 4 years. I have not used since starting on methadone. It is hard enough with all the current restrictions on methadone we do not need any more. |
| 2,808 | 8:33 pm PDT, Jun 27 | Mr. | Nathan Higgins | Fayetteville | Arkansas | Methadone has saved me from seeking unregulated doses of drugs on the street and probably saved the life of my son by keeping his mother away from uncontrolled doses. Our clinic provides extensive counciling and helps so many get their lives back into a manageable state and helps them return to some sort of normalacy in their day to day lives. I believe that further regualation would make it so difficult to receive treatment (because it already is in many places and has just been made available recently in my area). Creating more barriers for addicts will only encourage them to continue feed their addiction, dangerously, on the streets. If we make it more difficult to get help legally than it is to maintain illiclitly then the result should be obvious |
| 2,807 | 6:08 pm PDT, Jun 27 | Ms. | Barbara Pila | Oceanview, | Hawaii | Methadone has saved my life also. I don't know where or what I would be doing if it weren't for methadone, but I have to drive over 200 miles every 2 weeks, to a clinic, and I know that "they" can prescribe me a months take homes, I have no "dirties", and follow all the rules....why???why do they make it so hard to get and why is there such a stigma against it. As soon as you tell some doctors that yo are on methadone, you get treated a totally different way! I've been thinking about changing over to subloxen, but I'm terrified of 3 days withdrawl in order to get the medicine.I'm not a kid, I'm a respectable 54 yr. old woman who just wants her life a little simpler..thanx, and mahalo...:) |
| 2,806 | 11:31 am PDT, Jun 26 | Ms. | Anonymous | payson | Arizona | If it were not for methadone I would not be alive . methadone is the only thing that has kept me from doing all kinds of opiate pills at dangerous doses ...methadone keeps me "happy" and yet healthy |
| 2,805 | 11:13 am PDT, Jun 26 | Mr. | Anonymous | Brigantine | New Jersey | Been on MMT since May 13th 2008 and am thankful for it everyday. It works like nothing else can for opiate addiction and keeps me stable and productive. |

| 2,802 | 3:56 pm PDT, Jun 24 | Mrs. | sherri galbraith adkins | sanford | North Carolina | i was a opiate user for over 5 years! thank god for the methadone treatment center here in sanford, nc! the damage to myself and my body the opiates have done are so sad, but atleast ihave my sanity back and can be a active working member of the community again! please allow thouse of use who want to stay of opiates to be allowed to make our own choices as far as taking the treatments! i am 46 years old and i am so aware of the fact that if it wasnt for the methadone clinic, my family and friends would have already attened my funieral! please it isnt the drug alone that causes death it is the people that MISS USE THIS DRUG!!!!!!!!!!!!! sincerly sherri g. adkins sanford nc |
| 2,801 | 6:27 am PDT, Jun 23 | Ms. | Anonymous | Charlestown | Indiana | It has been a life-saver for me! I have been on a low-dose since April 6, 2009. I am a single mother of 2 and I am succeeding more now than I have in a long time. I am only 22 years old so Methadone has given me the chance to get my life on track before it really is too late. PLEASE do not restrict people who are using this medication properly. By doing so, you may deter someone who needs and wants help from getting it. Thanks! Miss Love |
| 2,800 | 8:57 pm PDT, Jun 22 | Mrs. | catherine robins | norcross | Georgia | methadone has helped me get off opiods & lead a productive life. i have been in treatment for 2years & 1+months. i have already attained the maximum takehomes & i am proud of how well i have done. without methadone i would probably still be on pills. |
| 2,799 | 2:38 am PDT, Jun 22 | Anonymous | richland | Washington | I live in a really big area that consists of 3 really big cities together. Their are many drug problems going on here but yet absoutly no help. We have one detox center with 3 beds, but they dont take opiate addicts. We almost got a methadone clinic over 2 years ago, the building was being furnished but yet a bunch of idiots demanded a town meeting and protested against it so it wasnt open. I have seen so many people die from opioid drug overdoses, but yet everyone in my area turns a blind eye to it. I'm really sure if that methadone clinic was opened that many of these deaths could of been advoided. The nearest methadone clinic is an hour and half away, that's just not reasonable for people in my area to have to drive that far 6 days a week, espcially with the prices of gas and those of us with small children. I really think that too many still think of addicts as homeless dirty drug-dealing bums, when most of us are actually normal people with normal jobs, my best friend is an opiate addict who is a high school teacher, you could never tell in a million years we are addicts, we have nice houses, nice cars, nice jobs, but yet we can lose all this stuff so simply. I have to drive several hours to get suboxone which has been wonderful for me, but it is too expensive and we have too many people who cant afford suboxone and methadone would literally be a life saver. | |
| 2,798 | 10:36 pm PDT, Jun 21 | Sheri Jenkins | Arlington | Texas | I am going tomorrow to start methadone at 8 AM. Will be my first time on it , but am all for anything that will stop the desructive cycle of opiate addiction. Wish me luck!! | |
| 2,797 | 10:33 pm PDT, Jun 21 | Mrs. | JAN PROCTOR | LENOIR CITY | Tennessee | IT HAS BEEN A YEAR SINCE I HAVE STARTED METHADONE TREATMENT. THANK GOD FOR SHOWING US THE WAY TO GO.WE ARE PROUD TO BE CLEAN AND OFF OF THE OXYCONTIN. |
| 2,796 | 11:20 pm PDT, Jun 20 | Ms. | Jennifer R. | Philadelphia | Pennsylvania | I have been on methadone for about 6 1/2 years at this point, and I have not used heroin since day two of my treatment. That, to me, is a miracle after the previous struggles I had with getting clean. At age 19, I had all but given up on ever being off of drugs and living a normal life. I was from a normal, middle class family- albeit, one with a history of addiction- and was very successful academically. I graduated from high school a year early and went off to one of the best women's colleges in the country. I was often told that I had a future "full of promise." Addiction, unfortunately, does not discriminate, just like any other disease. Through a set of circumstances beyond my control and the poor decision-making skills of a teenager, I became addicted to heroin. Within months, I had lost everything- my place at my dream school, the respect and trust of my friends and family, material possessions, that "promising future," and eventually even the roof over my head. I went from being a blessed, gifted young person to a junkie on the street, committing crimes to get money for what I needed and even spending some time in jail. After about two years, I was feeling hopeless, having tried rehabs and detoxing and twelve-step programs. They would help for a little while, but I could never stay clean for long. Something was always missing. Despite popular belief, most drug addicts are actually incredible people beneath the surface... thanks to one of those wonderful people, I was pointed in the direction of a methadone clinic. I was skeptical at first, but once I felt no need to use heroin anymore after only TWO DAYS, I knew I had found some hope. Methadone is not a miracle cure, but it is an absolutely invaluable tool in the recovery of opiate addicts. With methadone added to my recovery arsenal (twelve step programs, family support, spirituality, counseling, etc) I finally had a chance. I think of my recovery like a puzzle- if you take away one piece, the whole thing falls apart- and methadone is like those outer border pieces that support the whole puzzle. It hasn't been easy, but I have slowly rebuilt my life. Today I am able to be a daughter, sister, wife, friend, student, and supporter of other addicts trying to get clean. At 25, I have my life back, which is an absolute miracle when one considers the years and years of horror many heroin addicts experience. NONE OF THIS would have been possible without methadone. Imposing further restrictions on methadone will only hurt people like me, perhaps making it impossible for us to continue to receive the life-saving medication we need. Don't penalize those who are doing the right things because of a few who are not. |
| 2,795 | 3:47 pm PDT, Jun 20 | MeanDonnaJean Rock | The Bowels of Hell | New York | 25 years ago I was hooked on heroin and found out I was pregnant. That's when I first got on methadone and I still am to this very day. It's now 25 years later and yes, I've gone thru some trials 'n tribulations but methadone has been, and probably always will be, my saving grace. My children were born on it and had no complications after birth. Methadone is a medication just like any other medication....it can be used and it can be abused....but when it is used correctly it can be a lifesaver.....as it was/is for ME. | |
| 2,794 | 6:10 am PDT, Jun 19 | Matthew Gillispie | Alexandria | Louisiana | Methadone has changed my life around and now I am able to save money and function while under Methadone Treatment. It is much safer and a better alternative than opiate abuse. | |
| 2,793 | 10:33 am PDT, Jun 18 | Mr. | Anonymous | Spring Hill | Florida | I have been on methadone for chronic pain, after years on other medications that I kept having to increase and increase because they stopped helping. The stigma involved is horrendous because everyone thinks you're a dope fiend. I have no friends who use drugs nor do I. I feel they should let the Dr.s do their job and stop the hysteria |
| 2,792 | 5:25 am PDT, Jun 18 | Derek Strickland | Orange Park | Florida | I am currently in the Methadone Treatment program with Colonial Management Group, and I have been in treatment for two months. So far it has been great, and I haven't had any relapse. I am addicted to oxycodone time-released tablets, known commonly as it's brand name OxyContin, and have been addicted to that substance for a total of two years. Within that time I have suffered many unfortunate events from my addiction, but now that I am in treatment, I have completely changed my life. Methadone is almost a miracle drug for me, and it allows me to function as a normal everyday citizen. I know much about the Opiod agonist Methadone, and I have done a lot of research on the subject, and have come to find that it is very helpful in the field of addiction treatment. I will gladly support and sign this petition, as I, too, know that Methadone is a wonderful asset on a personal level dealing with addiction treatment. | |
| 2,791 | 12:40 am PDT, Jun 18 | Mrs. | Danielle Johnston | west allis | Wisconsin | methadone has saved my life and helped me to stay off heroin |
| 2,790 | 12:39 am PDT, Jun 18 | Mr. | russell Jacobs | west allis | Wisconsin | I'm finally staying clean from heroin and getting my life together |
| 2,789 | 3:18 am PDT, Jun 17 | Anonymous | seaside | Oregon | Blaming the substance for the addiction is being stuck in the problem. Methadone is a solution to a multitude of complex problems. I am a recovering Alcoholic and have been for 24 years. To make a long story short, I was afraid of becoming addicted to pain medication due to a chronic back issue as well as nuropathy in my legs. After Surgery, and an unsuccessful Pain Management clinic incident where I was prescribed fentanol ( spelling ?) for the pain which was way to strong in which 4 hours after appling the patch as directed, I almost overdosed. VERY scary! The clinic would not answer my calls so I ended up calling my GP. Thank God he took over my pain managment! he know I am in recovery I do not want to be mood altered or become addicted to pain killers BUT wanted quality of life. Methadone does not take away all of the pain and yes I am dependant upon the medication, but NOT addicted, which is an entirly different mind set.Today I can manage my pain, be a productive member of society and enjoy sobriety. Health providers need to be educated in the "Other" benifits of Methadone as I have indeed experienced the "Hysteria" in a dentists chair and in the E.R..There is indeed a great deal of shame with the mention of methadone.I wish I did not have to take any medication but life is not always fair. I believe in an accountable life. I became addicted to alcohol and I don't blame the vineyards of California. The thought of taking vicodine or anything like that on a long term basis does not seem like a solution, and the pain I was in indeed made me consider suicide. | |
| 2,788 | 2:54 am PDT, Jun 16 | Mr. | Martee Quillen | Lawrenceburg | Tennessee | The Methadone program saved my life. And I have been witness to other lives saved by this drug. It would be a shame to let irational fears create even more restrictions that would keep it from people who desperately need it. |
| 2,787 | 8:42 am PDT, Jun 15 | Cheryl L. Perry | Woonsocket | Rhode Island | I am a counselor in a methadone clinic since 2002 and I have been so blessed to have seen and continue to see miracles happen.I have seen drug addicts come in the door, get their act together, get clean, and leave to go out and take their place in society as productive human beings. I am truly the blessed one here. | |

| 2,785 | 6:21 pm PDT, Jun 14 | Mr. | robert baker | greenwood | Indiana | this works.further resticting use could put the brakes on people searching for help.i have been off all drugs legal illegal whatever.someday i will be comepletely off the program.never before have i had such sucess.please do not take this valuable tool away from our use. |
| 2,784 | 3:31 pm PDT, Jun 14 | lynda w gantt | columbia | South Carolina | Way too much government intervention by people who know absolutely nothing of what they speak. The hysteria surrounding anna nichole and her son have heightened the problem in the US and the clinics are subject to control that make effective treatment essentially impossible. Please people, don't push addicts back to the street. What if your cigarettes or alcohol fell into this nightmare? | |
| 2,783 | 11:42 pm PDT, Jun 13 | Mrs. | Heather Zoeller | Columbus | Ohio | I've recently been put on methadone for chronic pain issues and I'm 24 weeks pregnant. I wanted to get off of vicodin and ultram and do the best thing I can for my baby and for my pain. I want us both to be healthy and comfortable and I'm following my doctors orders. So far, so good. Methadone can be abused. I know this because I knew people who did so. But if used in a medical setting, it's a very good medication. |
| 2,782 | 9:25 pm PDT, Jun 13 | Anonymous | Morehead | Kentucky | Methadone for opiate addiction treatment has given me my life back. I am no longer involved in situations and engaging in actions that are illegal in order to obtain money to satisfy my opitate addiction. I am now able to maintain a normal life and hold a job. Before methadone I was constantly commiting crimes to obtain money for my addiction. However I have not committed any crimes or done anything "wrong" since starting my methadone treatment. In fact, since starting methadone treatment I have obtained and maintained a good job and improved my life dramatically. | |
| 2,781 | 11:29 am PDT, Jun 13 | Mrs. | kyle johnson | harrison | Tennessee | Im 26 years old and have been using drugs since age 15 and injecting them since age 19 so im a younger addict but an addict none the less; i have been in methadone treatment since january 09 and i honestly owe my life to it, i havent touched anything other than my prescribed daily dose since starting. Im just now learning of these types of web sites and i hope theres more of them. |
| 2,780 | 9:34 pm PDT, Jun 12 | Mr. | Anonymous | oakley | California | god does things for addicts we can't do for ourselves, it is the nature of addiction, but he gave us freedom thru methodone, to be the men and women we could not possibly have been in any other way. |
| 2,779 | 12:10 pm PDT, Jun 12 | Ms. | Terry Easom | Mooreville | Mississippi | I was very, very addicted to pain medication due to migraines and scoliosis for 37 years. It was an endless cycle. I would go to N.A. and get clean, but the pain would get so bad that I would start taking anything I could talk the doctors out of. Of course being an addict, I couldn't take them as prescribed. I took more and more and when I couldn't get enough from the doctors, I found other avenues to get them. Anyway, 5 years ago, a very dear friend ask me to go to a methadone treatment center with him and at least give it a try. He was so serious about me getting the help that he paid my way for the first year. That was the deal, to try it for at least a year. that way my mind would have time to clear up from the drug fog and then if I wanted to go back to that way of life then he at least gave me a different wayto live and I just didn't take it. That, my friends was 5 years ago come August! It was the best decision I have ever made in my entire life! Naturally, I was estranged from my family. My grown children had nothing for me and I couldn't be trusted around any kind of pain medication, because if you had it, I would take it. Now, since I have been taking my methadone as prescribed and going to the meetings that the treatment center has for us to attend, I have turned my life around completely! My children are so proud of me and I am trustworthy again in my family's eyes and most important I feel like I am being a productive human being instead of a washed out pillhead with nothing to live for but that next high. Now, I am helping other people get off the opiates and back into life. I know from experience and trial and many, many errors that without the methadone treatment, I would still be out there messed up or worse, I could be dead from an over dose. So, anyone out there that is reading this, before you jump to conclusions about methadone because of the blown out of proportion stories about methadone and the people who take it please get the facts from the people who are living a better life because of it. You can call most any methadone treatment facility and someone there will be happy to give you any information you ask for. Thank you for taking the time to read this. |
| 2,778 | 8:01 am PDT, Jun 11 | Mr. | Tony McGuire | West Jordan | Utah | I am on 10mg x 5 doses a day (pills). I started taking in beside morphine (30mg x [up to] 6 doses for breakthrough pain). This beside a couple of other drugs for extreme pain from diabetic neuropathy. Without Methadone I would be a screaming mass, regardless of the other medications. It keeps me somewhat able to handle the pain during the day and night. Without it I doubt I would still be sane. |

| 2,769 | 9:05 am PDT, Jun 7 | Anonymous | Lincoln | Rhode Island | I was addicted to oxycontin thru carlessness of doctors who continued to increase my dosage without warning me of the consequences. When I tried to stop taking them I became too ill to go to work or care for my children and home, I found ARI and was held on a very small dose less than 25mg and because of this I continued in school, my job, and my kids never missed a beat. The restrictions forced me to leave the clinic and fend for myself I still take 20mg a day but I buy it elsewhere because I could not dose daily at a clinic. I am currnetly looking for a doctor that I can be honest with and get the care I still need. | |

I think a big problem people have with methadone is that they think people use it for "just another drug" and unfortunately this is true for some people who are not yet ready to give it up. When people use prescription benzodiazapine, it is the same as heroin, but considered to be clean. This usually happens when the doctors are uninformed about which drugs the patient is taking. But for people who abstain from ALL other narcotics, this drug is a life saver.

I was a heavy drug user and I am thankful to the good Lord above that I was able to find something to help me because if I had not I would not be here today. If some people would just open their minds and try to understand what we are going through.

| 2,755 | 11:16 am PDT, May 28 | Melissa Monroe | Nashville | Tennessee | Im on methadone for the 2nd time. I have been to 11 rehab's and in and out of AA & NA for almost 30 years. This time i have been on methadone for almost 1 year, and am able to hold down a good job, have a happy home life and refrain from illegal drug use. If you follow the program the methadone clinic provides, it works. It has saved my life. | |
| 2,754 | 7:00 am PDT, May 28 | Anonymous | issaquah | Washington | I have been on methadone now for two and a half years. It has taken away my cravings for opiates AND other harmful drugs. By imposing restrictions on this medication, it does make me think of other options i have, other than going to the clinic, because of the punitive, negative environment there at the clinic. Please make it reasonable for those of us who are succeeding on the medication to keep taking it. To me, it is a life saving medication. I have been struggling with addiction for 10+ years, and have had success with methadone, long term. I have not been successful with any other treatment programs for any significant amount of time. Methadone allows me to be a productive, contributing and, may I mention, tax paying member of society. Addiction is a disease and i want to be treated with the dignity, care and respect of anyone else with a disease. i dont find it useful when the clinic staff must treat paying patients as bums, derelicts, and feel they must police us. Putting more restrictions on this medication is not the answer. | |

Methadone Patients Against Hysteria and Further Restrictions
There has been much written of late about the rise in deaths due to the abuse of Methadone. We lament these deaths, but feel that there has arisen an hysteria that proposes to restrict futher the prescription of this life-saving medication to the detriment of the 250,000 patients who receive this drug daily in addiction treatment programs across the United States. An overdose due to a person's recreational use of illicitly obtained methadone is NOT the fault of the drug, but of the person abusing the drug. Accidental overdoses by persons legitimately prescribed the drug for pain management purposes is again, not the fault of the drug, but of medical personnel who may not be educating patients enough to the dangers of such a long-acting analgesic. Deaths due to the recreational abuse of the drug lies with the abuser, not the substance.
Methadone when used correctly is an effective and inexpensive pain medication. In addiction treatment programs, methadone acts as endorphin replacement for the damaged brain chemistries brought about by long term exposure to opiates. It has been utilized safely and scrutinized closely for five decades, and has been declared the "gold standard" for opiate addiction treatment by our government's National Institutes of Health. It is also the most closely regulated drug in existance when used for this purpose. Investigations over the last three years by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration has shown that illicit methadone on the streets of America originates in pain management programs and NOT addiction treatment facilities.
Methadone SAVES lives! There are a quarter of a million patients receiving it daily in addiction treatment facilities across America who will attest to that fact. It is safe when used properly, and effective in the endorphin replacement therapy needed by these patients. We the undersigned wish to implore the Federal Centers for Substance Abuse Treatment(CSAT) to not fall victim to the hysteria presently surrounding this drug, and to make any changes where they belong -- in the pain management centers of America and NOT its addiction treatment programs.
An overdose death is always lamentable, but let's not "throw the baby out with the bathwater" and keep any changes to the offending areas of distribution. That is NOT the opiate addiction treatment programs of America.
