Demand Inaction: Don't Exempt Oil Companies From AB 32!

It's not often we ask you to tell your lawmakers to do nothing.

But California already enjoys one of the nation's best climate change programs. Since 2006, the law has rolled out incrementally, reducing greenhouse gases and improving public health.

Starting in January 2015, the law requires oil companies to join other huge emitters in reducing the industry's greenhouse gas emissions over time. So the industry lobbyists are pulling out all the stops in Sacramento, demanding exemptions or delays.

But we've already had these debates, and California decided that a strong climate change program couldn't let oil companies off the hook for reducing their pollution. With plenty of lead time to get ready, oil companies were included in the measure.

Tell your lawmaker to leave AB 32 alone. Don't amend it. Don't delay it. Just don't do anything to it! Demand Inaction Now!
Dear [Decision Maker],

The oil industry is determined not to participate in helping reduce pollution in this state. Most recently, the industry has attacked the Air Resources Board's inclusion of fuels under the cap-and-trade program.

Now AB 69 (Perea) has been amended to weaken the state's ability to reduce emissions from transportation fuels. The oil industry frames their support of AB 69 as a desire to protect poor people and consumers from gas price spikes. As a consumer, I find this cover story dishonest and misleading. The best way to protect consumers from the oil industry is to hold the oil industry accountable for its pollution and develop cleaner alternatives.

As your constituent, I am writing in support of the implementation of AB 32 and ask that you oppose AB 69 (Perea), and any other proposals designed to delay or undermine AB 32 programs. Climate and clean air standards are cutting fuel consumption and energy demand and will put us on a path to break oil's monopoly on transportation fuels.

AB 32 is already delivering cleaner fuels, insulation from gas-price spikes, healthier air, and less pollution--while our economy continues to grow. And it is helping California maintain its leadership position in the fast-growing clean energy sector. To continue progress, we need participation from all industries, especially those that produce transportation fuels that make up 40 percent of the State's carbon pollution.

In addition, California's clean energy and clean air standards are reducing fuel bills for California consumers and businesses. That's because current standards are bringing us more efficient vehicles that drive much farther on a tank of gas and save Californians money. The average Californian will likely pay 30 percent less in fuel bills by 2020 versus just three years ago. Big savings on fuels adds up to millions of dollars businesses and families can spend elsewhere in the economy.

The oil lobby is asking you to exempt oil companies from our cutting edge climate and clean air standards. The Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) has been debated enough. As your constituent, I ask that the Assembly just do nothing. Let AB 32 programs continue to roll out, on schedule, for the benefit of Californians.

[Your comments here]

I don't write to ask you to "do nothing" very often. In this case, the law in place is working and any efforts to undercut it will deny Californians a healthier environment and cleaner energy choices. Please do not pass AB 69 or any other proposals that would weaken California's ability to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

Sincerely,
