Save the habitat of the Southern Black-Throated Finches

The Abbott government has given the green light to the Carmichael mega-mine in the Galilee Basin, which threatens to destroy nearly 10,000 hectares of precious woodland habitat. This could spell disaster for rare Southern Black-Throated finches.

These birds, once common across central Queensland and the northern Great Dividing Range, were only recently re-discovered in the area, but they face an uncertain future if proposed coal mining proceeds. Not only would coal mining rob these unique and elegant birds of the habitat they need to survive, coal from the mines will pollute our air and water.

The federal government has approved Adani's mining plan and its railway, but it's not too late to save the finches. On 16 July, all of Australia's state and federal Environment Ministers and the Threatened Species Commissioner will gather in Melbourne for a Threatened Species Summit.

Minister Hunt has called the summit to ensure that "for the first time ever, threatened species will have an Australian Government policy framework with hard and measurable targets." It sounds great — a chance to address the big issues facing nature. But what if the real issues aren't even on the agenda?

Minister Hunt talks a lot about reducing the number of feral cats, and that is important, but unless we stop habitat loss and control global warming, our threatened species don't stand a chance. Now is the time to speak out. Let's make sure all of Australia's environment ministers take their duty of care to protect life seriously.

Sign now and tell the ministers at the Threatened Species Summit: Our wildlife deserves urgent protection.

Your signature will be hand delivered at the Threatened Species Summit by Australian Conservation Foundation's CEO Kelly O'Shanassy.
Minister Hunt, Commissioner Andrews, and Honourable State and Territory Environment Ministers:

As this historic summit on Threatened Species convenes, as well as addressing invasive species, we the undersigned urge you to:

- Stop the loss of threatened species habitat from mining, logging and land clearing.

- Protect the “climate refuge” habitat threatened species need as our planet heats up.

- Develop a national plan to cut pollution and tackle global warming.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
