I have encountered several "close call" incidents where a driver was on their cell phone while driving, and shoved me into another lane. Cell phone use while driving needs to stop.

652 3:47 pm PDT, Aug 26 Mr. Anonymous My Rolls Royce was rear ended two times within 4 months by two different women on their cellphones. I wasn't even moving at the time (yielding to traffic on an on-ramp to I-95 and the other while I was waiting for a red light to change and proceed. Both times I wasn't even moving! This non-attentiveness MUST stop and drivers should CONCENTRATE on the task at hand...DRIVING! After all, you are propelling over 4,000 pounds of steel through the air with others surrounding you either equal or heaver than yours. WAKE UP PEOPLE BEFORE YOU KILL SOMEONE....OR YOURSELF ALSO!
651 10:59 am PDT, Jul 17 Mrs. Anonymous i encountered many times nearly have someone run into me ,and ofcourse you look and there on a cell phone.I believe you have to worry more about drivers with cell phones than drunk drivers because there is more of them. Who does not have a cellphone, not many people.I also notice them driving slow ,but it because there distracted
650 10:43 am PDT, Jun 30 Mr. alex vega no one should have to die because of anothers neglegence.
649 8:24 am PDT, Jun 14 Mrs. Casey Janes No one should have to die because of a cell phone!
648 10:40 am PDT, May 6   Kim Grunewald My daughter died while talking to me on her cell phone while driving - believe me, you don't want to listen to someone you love, or anyone, as they die.
647 9:50 am PDT, May 6   Kathy Couch My son was killed by a red light runner talking on the cell phone. Save a life hang up and drive
646 11:54 am PDT, Apr 21 Ms. Marilyn Nelson Just last week my friends and I were almost hit by someone on a cell phone pulling onto a highway beside a large truck...this person never looked and would have killed us all had we not room to move over into the oncoming lane to get around her...even then it was only a matter of an inch from hitting us in the passenger side of the vehicle...so many people are on cell phones and not paying attention to their driving.

639 2:37 pm PDT, Apr 28   Anonymous Yes this should become a law because my friend got hit by a car and the idiot driving was on a cell phone.A life shouldnt be destroyed due to careless-ness.
638 7:22 pm PDT, Apr 26 Ms. Anonymous I would really like to see a law banning cell phone use while driving a vehicle. If it is that important to talk then the driver needs to pull off the road and talk. Three times this week alone, someone almost crashed into my car and all three times it was someone on a cell phone while driving and not paying attention to what they were doing. One of the times I had my daughter in the car with me. This has got to stop. People will get killed because it is more important to talk on a cell phone then to pay attention to driving. Getting behind the wheel of a car is risky as it is and we don't need cell phones to help make it worse. Innocent people are going to get hurt or killed including children. This is not funny. The lawmakers really need to do something about this before it gets worse.
636 4:07 pm PST, Feb 9 Ms. danielle vernon my mom has signed the petition to, shes also been hit by a car well someone was talking on a cellphone and im only ten i need someone to be able to do stuff with me thats why im signing the petition.
635 12:37 am PST, Feb 5   Anonymous I was injured by a driver on a cell phone. I was a pedestrian in a crosswalk with a puppy on a leash. The driver was driving a pickup truck, using a cell phone and turning left. A withness observed him looking straight ahead while turning left, instead of looking to the left to where he was turning. I don't believe the driver set out to run anyone down, but I do believe he was distracted by the cell phone and was running on automatic pilot. He will have to live with this for the rest of his life. I was thrown 15 feet to the side of the road. I suffered a head injury and a spinal cord injury. The puppy had to be put down as the teeth were not meshing together and the vet couldn't guarantee the brain wouldn't be scrambled. At that point my life and that of my 7 year old daughter (at that time - 3 1/2 years ago), my now 31 year old daughter (even though she doesn't live with us), and my husband came to a halt, as we knew it, and everything turned upside down. I have had migraines and pain all over my body every moment ever since and I had major surgery to my neck to remove three disks and they had to operate on my hip as well to remove bone to be used in my neck in place of the disks; then they put a titanium plate with screws to hold it all together. I still have one damaged disk in my neck that they said is not necessary to operate on at this time. I was told I would never work again. I do not want to believe this, but at this time I can not work. Just typing this is extremely difficult for me. I feel like I am a prisoner in my own body and as a result I suffer from depression. I use an outdoor walker and a quad cane. All this affects my daughter who is ten now, my 31 year old daughter and my husband (also my sister and brother and other relatives and friends). While I was in pain and greiving my losses my mother died suddenly three months after I was struck down so I had to deal with greiving her at the same time. My father-in-law passed away a year later. So needless to say we have had a lot of greiving to do since October 2003. Almost too much to bear. I have no idea what my future holds for me, especially since my pain is never-ending. Can you imagine if we could have safer streets? Can you imagine saving people's futures from tragic car accidents where people lose lives or become injured for life where everything they have ever known turns upside down and they are left with injuries that last a lifetime? Imagine losing one or both parents (if you were a child). Imagine living with pain every moment of your life or becoming paralyzed or unable to think or make decisions for yourself ever again. Imagine losing your independence. Everything we all take for granted!!! Want to save millions on auto insuranc injury payouts that keep increasing every driver's insurance premiums? Want to save millions on health care due to auto accidents? Cell phones are responsible for millions of accidents world-wide. Some countries have even banned cell phone use in the automobile and others have made laws making it illegal to use cell phones while driving. This is because many people have lost lives or had their lives altered drastically due to horrific injuries, especially head and spinal cord injuries. Studies have shown that the driver's attention is that of an alcohol impaired driver while using a cell phone and yet we do not have laws similar to drunk drivers laws (criminal record, etc.) to penalize the driver who causes such and accident while using a cell phone in the automobile. Most countries still have no laws making it illegal to use cell phones while driving, or, better still, banning cell phone use in the automobile. These tragic deaths and injuries do not only seriously affect the ones killed and injured, but also their families and loved ones in so many ways. If we banned cell phone use in automobiles, we would not have tragic deaths and injuries due to cell phone use in the automobile, and, as a result, our insurance rates would be lower and the health care system would cost us all less. There would be more hospital beds, emergency room waiting times would be shorter, MRI and surgery wait lists would also be shorter and doctors would have less patients; therefore, family doctors would be more accessible (and maybe we wouldn't even suffer from doctor shortages). Please help by signing the petition and support safer streets for everyone!!! You never know who's life or future you're saving!!! P.S. "Hands free" cell phones are not the solution as studies show the driver is still preoccupied with the conversation, therefore, reactions are impaired.
634 5:33 pm PST, Jan 23 Mr. James Chilton I've had way too many close accidents with people who are on their cell phones. Add email, video and other data on email and now you see people looking down at their phone instead of concentrating on their driving. Lawmakers need to wake up and stop the use of cell phones while driving ASAP.
633 12:20 pm PST, Jan 15   Claire Watson
632 3:00 pm PST, Dec 9   Stephanie Burchett Talking on cell phones while driving is dangerous. If the phone is badly needed then PULL-OVER and use it. Maybe something like a hands free thingy would be better. I am not saying I have never used my cell phone while driving because I have, but my full attention was not on the road.
631 10:19 pm PST, Nov 24 Mr. Bruce Ho I understand the benefits of using a cell phone while driving. Benefits include being able to chat with friends, calling for help incase of automobile failures and many other priviledges that come with owning a phone. Let us weigh the options from both sides of the argument. Is it better to be able to chat with friends, or to safer on the road? What if someone you love and cared about were killed in an accident due to the other motorist being distracted by their cell phone? What if you were distracted while using your phone and end up taking another person's life? How would you feel about taking another person's life? How would you feel if someone you loved and cared about was killed in an accident caused by a cell phone distracted motorist? I believe there are benefits to being able to chat on a phone while driving. But the costs are way too high. It costs us our lives, the lives of innocent bystanders, and the lives of people we care very much about.
630 12:12 pm PDT, Oct 18   harold souza you shouldnt be allowed to talk on a cell phone wile driving , if you want to talk on the phone pull over , i see wile driving on the freeways driver pluging up the freeways , going slow , talking on the phone , you cant talk and drive at the same time , if thay outlawed cell phone wile driving we wouldnt have as much traffic on the road , cell phone drivers as as bad as drunk drivers , talking on a phone wile driving should have the same fine as drunk driving , there as many wrecks drunk driving as cell phone driving wrecks , and that has been documented truth
629 6:53 pm PDT, Sep 23   Laura R If you'r driving and talking on the phone you'r not paying attention! Stop endangering the lives of other people! Its common sense!!Make your calls before you get on the road.

623 2:01 pm PDT, Jun 30   Anonymous Recent studies by researchers at the University of Utah have shown that cell phone users are 5 times more likely to have an accident than non-distracted drivers. This study also showed cell phone users to be more dangerous THAN DRUNK DRIVERS!! We don't tolerate drunk driving so why should we tolerate any distractions behind the wheel that puts innocent people's lives in danger. People need to use some common sense and leave the Phones OFF while driving.

616 4:12 pm PST, Mar 14 Mrs. Kathleene Merrell I drive a school bus for an Elementary School. I have multi folks run my stop sign. When they do I lay on the horn. The only difference between the folks running my stop sign is the ones on cell phones verses the ones not on cell phones. The ones not on a cell phone either break or stop even if they are past my bus. The ones on cell phone do not brake nor do they stop. They do not even know they illegally ran my school bus STOP sign. This has happened on numerous occasions. Somthing really needs to be done to address this issue and it needs to be done soon.
615 8:30 pm PST, Mar 8   Anonymous its a selfish thing to do. put other peoples lives at risk. might as well not wear your seatbelt. "hands free" is a wonderful solution!
614 12:55 pm PST, Feb 27 Ms. Laura Beltram Villalpando "Hands Free" Phones are a must. My husband and I were hit from behind on the Freeway, (@ 55 mph), in stop and go traffic, by a user of a Hand Held Phone who was more involved in dialing than his driving and was distracted from paying attention to the heavy traffic conditions.

609 2:55 pm PST, Feb 10 Ms. skylar schaffer atleast once a day while driving I am either cut off or reduced to doing 50mph in the fast lane because someone driving is to busy conducting there conversations in their car, Instead of paying attention to the traffic on the road. People talking on cell phones and driving are a risk to everyone on the road

Stop cell phone use while driving

I have two beautiful daughters and would hate to lose their lives to a simple phone conversation. Cell phone use while driving is similar to drinking and driving becuase one is not using all of their senses behind the wheel. We need to takes this issue very seriously before others become harmed, or maybe you.
