Don't Let Congress Hold Us Hostage For Overinflated Military Spending!

As Congress works to put together a new federal budget a potential threat looms over all of us: Some members of Congress will stop at nothing to keep needlessly expensive military projects in the budget, even if they have to risk shutting down our government in the process.

We've seen this type of reckless spending before: Members of Congress who otherwise claim to be fiscally responsible try to spend billions of dollars on projects that inflate our budget while doing nothing to keep anyone safer.

A number of conservatives are trying to sneak in spending through a special war-spending slush fund. That could mean continued funding for absurd projects - like the F-35, which would cost a projected $400 billion for 2,443 planes. President Obama has promised a veto if they succeed in this chicanery.

If pro-military spending representatives keep pushing for these bloated budgets it could cause a stalemate over the budget and even a full government shutdown when Congress takes up the budget again in December.

We can't allow expensive, unnecessary militarization hold our country hostage! Send a message to your representatives today to say it's unacceptable to bankrupt our economy for the sake of bloated military spending!
Dear [Representative]:

Time and time again we see billions of dollars allocated towards overinflated military projects that do nothing to keep us and our country safe. Now, with budget discussions underway, representatives trying to force through these unnecessary projects could bring our entire government to a stand still.

It is not acceptable to shut down our government for the sake of bloated military spending!

It's time to finally take a stand and reduce bloated military spending with the following cuts:

CUT THE F-35—the most expensive weapons program in history. The Pentagon plans to buy 2,443 aircraft at a projected cost of $400 billion, nearly twice the initial cost projection. The F-35 program is behind schedule, plagued by cost overruns and has repeatedly failed to meet key performance goals.

CUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS MODERNIZATION PROGRAMS—The Cold War ended over 20 years ago but the U.S. still spends billions of tax dollars every year to maintain its nuclear overkill and billions more to 'modernize' the entire nuclear weapons production and delivery complex to keep it operational for the remainder of this century.

CUT MISSILE DEFENSE—$40 billion was spent in the past decade and has produced a string of failed tests. There is no impenetrable shield in sight that can protect us from a threat posed by rogue nations that doesn't yet exist.

CUT THE LITTORAL COMBAT SHIP—Experts say it will cost over three times the original estimate. A recent Pentagon's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation report states, the "LCS is not expected to be survivable in high-intensity combat."

CUT THE M1 ABRAMS TANK—the Pentagon doesn't even want it. The U.S. currently has approximately 2,300 M-1s deployed around the world and 3,000 M-1s stored in the Nevada desert.

CUT OVERSEAS MILITARY BASES AND SUPPORT A BASE REALIGNMENT AND CLOSURE COMMISSION—There are over 1,000 U.S. military bases abroad including those in countries who can afford their own security. Within the U.S. there are bases that the Pentagon wants to close, but Congress won't let them.

Please, take a stand and make sure we successfully pass a budget that reins in this unnecessary Pentagon spending.

Sincerely,
