Make Public Schools in Your State Go Green

Target: State Governors
Sponsored by: Care2
It's time to teach our children to "think green." Alternative schools have the unique ability to integrate green-minded curriculum into the classroom. But green curriculum in schools will only work if it is encouraged and supported by your state's governor.

One such green school, a public charter school in New York, is reshaping curriculum, teaching and learning spaces to integrate the ecological, social and economic facets of sustainability into a whole-school model.

These green charter schools strive to teach required subjects in the context of environmental education. Children learn math through measuring trees and leaves and understand relative differences as they learn that elms are taller than box elders. Green public charter schools can offer courses like sustainable gardening, where the products of gardening lessons can be used as healthy snacks promoting both healthy and green living.

Tell your state's governor to support green curriculum in public schools, teaching our children to Think Green.

Dear Governor,

The most effective way to make our world a greener place is to teach the value of green living to our children, so that they may continue the sustainability efforts that we have only just begun.

Bound by endless regulations, traditional public schools are restricted to basic curriculum. But alternative schools, like public charter schools, have the unique ability to integrate green-minded curriculum into the classroom.

In some cases, green scenery becomes the classroom. Green public charter schools have integrated life-lessons for healthy and green living through classes that focus on organic flower and vegetable gardens, urban planning, public health and environmental justice.

Please help schools teach children the greener lessons they will need in a changing society. The more children who are ecologically educated, the more future adults who will be able to have "green" jobs. The future starts now - are we ready?

Many poor children have not or do not want to be out in the world the Lord has created.
