Make UK companies pay their fair share of tax in Malawi, the world's poorest country

  • by: ActionAid UK
  • recipient: UK Financial Secretary to the Treasury
Since 1955, the UK has had a tax treaty with Malawi, the world's poorest country, making it possible for UK companies operating there to pay little or no corporate tax. If companies paid their fair share of tax, investment in public services could be increased so that women and girls no longer pay the price.

Thousands of Malawians are campaigning to make tax fair in their country through ActionAid Malawi and many other organisations. ActionAid Malawi is calling on Malawian Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe, and in the UK we're calling on the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, to put a new treaty in place that ensures that Malawi can make UK multinationals operating there pay their fair share of tax.

If enough of us – here and in Malawi – come together to demand change we can get this treaty changed.

Sign the petition today and urge the UK Financial Secretary to the Treasury to put a new treaty in place that will make sure that UK companies operating in Malawi pay their fair share.
We call on you to make sure the UK’s tax treaty with Malawi enables Malawi to fairly tax the money UK multinational companies take out of their country. This money is urgently needed to fund essential services like healthcare and education.
