Demand Real Protection for Giant Sequoia National Monument

Target: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
The Giant Sequoia trees of California are the largest living trees in the world ... some are as ancient as 3,400 years old, with a diameter of greater than 35 feet and the height of a 25-story building.

Giant Sequoias are among the oldest living trees on the planet. Many took root long before our great, great grandparents were born, and will live to see our great, great grandchildren -- if we don't allow the timber industry to destroy them first.

The Giant Sequoias were here before our nation was founded, quietly witnessing the evolution of our society. Now our "progress" is the greatest threat to their continued survival.

Sign the petition today to urge US leaders to bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

To: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi

I urge you, as a leader in Congress, to finally bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Proposals for commercial logging in the Monument are in strict violation of the Presidential Proclamation that established this special place and now is the time to insist on real protection.

In addition, I ask that you use your power to transfer the management of the Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service, where it will be better protected from the timber industry's relentless attacks.

Sincerely,

[your name]

We need to save these beautiful ancient Sequoias. They are a beautiful part of our history. They have been here longer then us, they should remain here for future generations to enjoy. I visited the Sequoia National Park, and there are some of the biggest and oldest trees on earth. The General Sherman is the largest living thing on our earth. They say it’s between 2,000 and 2,300 years old. There is the Tunnel Log, which is a fallen sequoia tree that you can really drive your car through it. The bark on these trees is two feet thick which is why they have lasted this long. The bark protects them fire and bugs. There are over 40 different species of Sequoia. Please save our Sequoias.

Destroying our plants means recklessness towards ourselves, all animals and living beings. This is not our right, since we are here only for a limited time. Our moral responsibility comprises environmental protection, too.
