Tell Your Senators Why America Needs a Strong Climate Bill

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund

The U.S. House passed a landmark bill that would for the first time set a legal limit on America's global warming pollution. Now all eyes are on the Senate where the climate legislation is expected this Fall.

But the right wing is obsessed with fighting this legislation and have pulled out all the stops. Since announcing her resignation, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has joined forces with ExxonMobil, Rush Limbaugh and other climate obstructionists and will undoubtedly resurrect the right-wing "Drill-Baby-Drill" mantra!

America has a clear choice. We can follow Palin and the extreme right or unleash a clean energy future. Now is the time to end the threat of run-away global warming. Sign the petition and urge your Senators to support the strongest possible global warming bill!

I understand that the Senate will be taking up global warming legislation this Fall. As your constituent, I am writing today to strongly urge you to support a strong bill that sets a legal limit to reduce America's global warming pollution by at least 80% by 2050.

[Your comment will be inserted here]

Scientists warn we have very little time to begin cutting our emissions. A reduction in climate pollution of 80% by 2050 is what the science demands if we are to avoid the risk of catastrophic global warming with devastating consequences for people and the planet.

With international climate negotiations scheduled to begin in Copenhagen this December, we need to show the world that the U.S. is ready to lead on this issue. Failure to move a strong global warming bill will undermine international global warming negotiations and set us back years. This is precious time we cannot afford to waste if we are to effectively solve the climate crisis.

This issue is important to all people. Your descendants will live on this planet in the future: What kind of environment would you like them to live in? If strong measures aren't enacted now, if the US doesn't step up to the plate and lead in this important global issue, your family WILL be affected in the future. It's time to think "outside the Beltway".

Looking out for the planet we live on is the most important challenge we face, and it's truly a global concern. If the United States doesn't join and lead the world by enacting strong climate change legislation, we will increasingly find ourselves at war with the rest of the world as we struggle to control dwindling resources. We will be a stronger nation if we make some bold moves on climate change legislation.

This is a no-brainer...... a liveable world and the continuation of life in its many forms, or a death-sentence short-term stupidity for short-term profits for the already rich who have no conscious or concern for mankind, the world, and the future. Please support this bill. Common sense says to support it. It would be unconscionable not to.

Climate change may be the most important legislative issue in the history of governments. It makes no sense to hedge and bargain about this.
