World Cancer Awareness Campaign: one day is not enough!
Dear Supporters,
The first World Cancer Day. Pasted below you will find more info.
YET ONE DAY IS NOT RIGHT WE NEED ONE YEAR OF AWARENESS & EDUCATION ! MORE CHILDREN IN THE USA DIES THAN IN THE WAR IN IRAQ ABOUT 3 1/2 times as many !
In support of the World Cancer Day Awareness Campaign (Feb. 4th), Candlelighters is proud to announce the website release of a photo essay focused on the impact of childhood cancer in the United States.
The photo essay can be viewed both as a 30 second PSA (Public Service Announcement) as well as a 2 1/2 minute video by clicking on the following link: http://www.candlelighters.org/PhotoEssay.stm
Candlelighters would like to express our deepest appreciation to Photographer - Jed Share, Producer - Trevor Romain, Editor - Stephen Bohls, Musician - Doug Burns, as well as to the UICC (International Union Against Cancer ), to Dr. Nita Sibel and the cancer children from Children's National Medical Center, Washington DC who shared their journey with us. A deep appreciation is also extended to those families who shared feedback describing the impact of the cancer diagnosis on their child's life.
YOU TOO CAN JOIN IN BUILDING AWARENESS! Please help build awareness of the difficult battle that America's youngest cancer patients face each day, by spreading word about this video and about the on-going burden of this disease in America.
160,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, of which approximately 90,000 will die of their disease.
Cancer remains the #1 disease killer of America's children
No change in overall survival rate in the US since 1998.
Many childhood cancer types continue to have a 50/50 survival rate, including acute myelogenous leukemia, neuroblastoma stage IV, metastatic bone cancer, numerous brain tumors.
Approximately 2/3rds of those who do survive face potential life-long late effects, one quarter of which are classified as moderate to severe. (cognitive deficit, secondary cancers, endocrine dysfunction, sterility, cardiopulmonary dysfunction)
**Please help our nation's cancer children by forwarding the link to your local members of Congress, your place of business, cancer representatives at other cancer organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, other cancer families, cancer listservs, as well as to your friends and families. TOGETHER as families who have 'walked this walk' we can help build awareness of the true devastation of this disease on the lives of our nation's cancer children!
