Make Pre-k Available for Every Child

Target: Rep. George Miller, Chair, and Rep. Buck McKeon, Ranking Member, House Committee on Education and Labor
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now

For the first time in four years, the number of governors recommending increases in pre-k funding declined. With 22 states facing deficits, the economic downturn felt coast to coast threatens to halt years of positive momentum to make quality pre-k available to every three and four year old.

The Pre-K Act would change that by providing billions of dollars to support preschool programs nationwide. It would:

* reduce student-teacher ratios;
* recruit and retain qualified teachers with bachelor's degrees in early childhood education;
* address the cultural and linguistic needs of English Language Learners;
* provide full-day vs. half-day programs, and
* other activities that support program quality.

Preschool has proven to be highly beneficial to children, preparing them mentally and socially for their upcoming education. Quality preschool shouldn't be only available to the wealthy. Make it possible for every child -- sign the letter today.

I am writing to express my strong support for the PRE-K Act, introduced by Rep. Mazie Hirono, which would expand access to pre-k programs for our nation's four year olds. I urge you to move this bill to the top of your committee's agenda.

We have a narrow window of opportunity in each child's life when early education can set him or her on a trajectory for success. Delaying this legislation is denying millions of American children the chance to enter school ready and confident. Ask any Kindergarten teacher: too many of today's five year olds are starting school without the social, emotional, and academic foundations they need to thrive. At just the moment when their capacity for learning is greatest, most of them don't have access to quality pre-k programs.

My siblings went to Pre-K and it definitly helped them in the long run with school! They learned so much and had an advantage going into the bigger grades. This should be a MUST HAVE in all schools, private and public!

It gives children tools for learning at an age where they can get the most benefit. It enhances their ability to investigate things that spark their curiosity while they are still receptive and hopeful about learning.

Pre-k helps children learn the basics early. Most kids are expected to know these basics whether or not they have been to pre-k, making those who didn't fall behind. Not all parents are able to teach their pre-k age kids what they need to know for kindergarden.

Preschool education has been shown to be, without question, of tremendous benefit to the development of our nation's children. Let's be intelligent about supporting those opportunities for all children in our country.

Please give children a chance to succeed and build confidence in a safe learning environment. When this learning is fostered, building healthy relationships with the family occurs as well (positive discipline, etc). Please allow these programs to continue.

Early intervention and education is critical to help children with the demands of school standards. Implementing a Pre-K program will provide structure and stability not only for the families who can afford quality preschool care, but for everyone -every child.

Education is the most important thing to have in life. popularlity money and looks can only get you so far in life. This is what is wrong with our country. Our goverment spends so little on education and the payment of our educators it's ridiculus. Pre-k should be available and mandatory for all children. The younger a child is when they begin to learn the more they will learn.
