Tell University Gardens: Dont Evict Katrina Evacuees!

In a time when we need more compassion and kindness in the world, what kind of monster kicks a person when she's down. What kind of institution would inflict the pain, fear and devastation of homelessness on those who have already lost their homes, their livelihoods, their belongings, and their way of life? University Gardens Apartments of Athens GA is doing just that. Please join me in telling them, don't evict victims of hurricane Katrina.

Like so many victims of Katrina, Che Vaughn lost her home, her belongings and her way of life. She has worked hard to rebuild a life for herself in a new town. But a year after her life was devastated by the worst natural disaster to ever hit the US, disaster struck again, leaving her financially deprived. Her landlords, the University Garden Apartments in Athens GA, are threatening her with eviction. She is once again facing the loss of her home, her livelihood, and her lifestyle. Please tell the Managers of University Garden Apartments not to evict Che or any other Katrina evacuees. Their loss has been great enough.

Che is a writer and artist. Though her mobility is effected by arthritis she remains active in fundraising and charity. Very recently two streams of her income were cut off suddenly, and she was left temporarily unable to pay her rent. Though the situation will soon be rectified, she is nonetheless being threatened with eviction. Only ten days late with her rent, she began receiving threatening letters and communiques from her landlord.

Is there anything more fearful than the threat of losing one's home, one's shelter, one of the major necessities of life? And to be threatened with the eventuality so soon after losing one's home to a hurricane must be doubly terrifying. Che is not asking for a free ride, just a little time.

Please tell University Garden Apartments not to evict Che or any Katrina evacuees, to be patient and work with these victims to help them maintain a home and a new way of life. Please sign the petition and also take a moment to go to the University Garden contact page. (link opens new window) Send them a personal note stating that their behavior in this case is reprehensible. Ask them to look into their hearts and find a little patience and generosity. Ask them not to evict Che or any other victims of Katrina.

19 9:53 pm PDT, Aug 22 Bob Green Georgia United States This is appalling. Do you think katrina victims are going to recover overnight? Show some compassion and patience. We're talking about hundreds of thousands of displaced people who need to reintergrate into new communities, find jobs, recover losses, make new friends, start new lives and most importantly, recover a sense of mental and emotional security. Eviction isn't helping anyone gain a sense of security. Don't evict.
18 7:47 pm PDT, Aug 21 Jeneva Perry Pennsylvania United States Dear landlord and property manager, please hear this. You need your tenents in order to survive. Your tenents need you to provide reliable shelter. You are by nature and livelihood a shelter. Do not revoke your shelter during someone's time of need. Patience, kindness, and understanding is needed. Work with your tenents, especially those most vulnerable due to the trauma of having lost so much. Do not turn your back on this woman.
17 11:17 am PDT, Aug 21 Josiah Evans New Jersey United States It's ridiculous to evict people who have lost everything and are awaiting federal relief funds. Frankly, it should be made illegal, as it is clearly immoral and just plain hateful. Having lived in the South for a quarter century, I can say that many CLAIM to be Christians, but when it comes to the difficult, compassionate choices, they fail to show themselves as adherents to the true Christian doctrine. I am disgusted to hear that any Katrina victims would be evicted from their homes, once by hurricane and a second time by petty capitalists. I will be contacting my representatives immediately to bring this matter to light.
16 6:13 am PDT, Aug 21 Shelley Domingue   Canada You people should be ashamed of yourselves. It's not hard enough to be uprooted from your home through no fault of your own and then this? Sometimes compassion and a helping hand and patience should be more important than late rent. It's not like people don't want to work.
15 9:53 pm PDT, Aug 18 Cari Harris California United States People are still suffering??? That is unbelievable!
14 9:04 am PDT, Aug 18 Richard Barry New Jersey United States Do not celebrate the anniversary of Katrina by evicting someone who lost everything in the hurricane. Che temporarily lost her source of income in a recent storm, but that situation has been rectified. Have some compassion. Don't let greed be your guide.
13 4:26 pm PDT, Aug 17 C O Langley   United Kingdom It is disgusting to me how civilised human being can treat one another with so little regard. These people have lost everything. Give them a chance to gain something back before slamming the door in their faces. Don't evict.
12 1:28 pm PDT, Aug 17 Erica Fickes Louisiana United States I'm a victim of Katrina too and I can attest to just how frightening and painful the expereince was and still is. I'm lucky. I didn't lose everything. But everyone knows someone who did and it takes a lot of corage to rebuild from zero. Shame on you. I would prefer to think that in times of crisis and need, people pull together and help one another out. I saw so much compasson and care during this crisis. What is wrong with you? wher is your care? Don't evict Katrina victims. Tere is a spcial place in hell for people with so little compassion.
11 10:04 am PDT, Aug 17 Karen Kiefer Ohio United States I don't know Che personally, but I've heard a lot about her from a friend of mine. She seems like a good person! It's sad how we live in a society where people try to take things away from good people! It's not right, and it's not fair! Why not give her a little more time? I certainly wouldn't have wanted to go through a tragedy like Katrina, only to have the rug pulled out from under me yet again. And if something DID happen to me, I'd expect a little more compassion than she seems to be getting.
10 10:02 am PDT, Aug 17 Toni Rowe Georgia United States I know what it is like to face being homeless due to financial problems. But this? Someone being homeless again after the shock of Katrina. It brings me tears and complete sadness to find that she is yet a victim once more. Please work something out so she can keep her present home. Thank you!
9 9:19 am PDT, Aug 17 Heather Thompson California United States PAY UP!!!!!!!!
8 8:20 am PDT, Aug 17 Bas van Dam   Netherlands I have not met Che in person, but met here through internet. And we've been in contact via email every day for over a year. Right through the horror of the NO evactuation. Give this woman a break. She too special. She's working hard to build a living and could really do with a little patience. Have a little patience. Please.
7 6:29 am PDT, Aug 17 John Brown Georgia United States I have known Che Vaughn for 9 years. I remember the terror and loss she experienced during/after Katrina. The 'stress' upon hurricane victims cannot be imaginable - unless you know them personally! Or if it had happened to YOU! See this and give understanding. She has been through enough loss. Please Do Not Evict!
6 5:51 am PDT, Aug 17 Tami Emma Georgia United States 1. What humans are doing to OUR planet - destroying the environment - causing more natural disasters! 2. Natural disasters effect (in return) humans. 3. Since the route of this Evil is from humans...then humans should have compassion and RESPONSIBILITIES to pull together to help the victims. It's not just University Gardens...BUT everyone SHOULD help!!! Unite, care...and GIVE hope! NOT evict!
5 4:45 am PDT, Aug 17 Ghis Soileau Louisiana United States I have been doing volunteer work with victims of Katrina for the past year. The plight of many evacuees is far from over. Lives have been devastated not just financially but emotionally and psychologically as well. Che you are in my prayers along with all the victims of this terrible disaster.
4 4:34 am PDT, Aug 17 Che Vaughn Georgia United States I think I should probably sign since its my ass on the line. Thanks everyone.
3 4:25 am PDT, Aug 17 Pol Hoogaboom   Netherlands I am against the eviction.
2 4:14 am PDT, Aug 17 Deshuvah Akrida Georgia United States Let goodness and not greed be your guide
1 4:12 am PDT, Aug 17 Saul Rhodehamel Georgia United States You should be ashamed. Don't evict hurricane victims!

Tell University Gardens: Dont Evict Katrina Evacuees!

We the aforesigned are asking that you, the management of University Garden Apartments of Athens GA look into your hearts and find the patience, kindness and generosity to work with those victims of Katrina who are still in need. Please don't evict Katrina evacuees, refugees, and displaced persons.

Che Vaughn is a kind, creative, thoughtful and hard-working person who deserves a second chance at life after losing everything she owns in the most devastating hurricane in US history. She has now experienced a temporary setback financially, but this is no reason to seek immediate eviction. Don't let corporate greed cause you to lose sight of your humanity. Dont evict Che or any victims of Katrina.
