Ottawa: Meet With Sixties Scoop Victims and Honour Your Commitment to Good Relations with First Nations in this Country

  • by: Amelia Meister

The Sixties Scoop is a huge blemish in Canada's history. From the 1960s to the early 80s the Canadian government took First Nations and Metis children from their homes and placed them in foster homes or put them up for adoption. Many children ended up in residential schools as well.

With the PM Trudeau's apparent commitment to healing relations with First Nations in Canada, a group of victims of the Sixties Scoop have written to request a meeting to discuss healing and reparation from this obvious violation of human rights.

However, the government of Canada has yet to reply to the group. Despite their interest in Truth and Reconciliation and the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, the government is still not committing enough attention to the 20000+ individuals who were stolen from their families, cultures and languages.

Sign today to stand with victims of the Sixties Scoop and let Canada know that they must make greater commitments to healing the rifts in First Nations relations with the Canadian government.

To the Honourable Carolyn Bennett and the Right Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,

I believe in right relations between the government of Canada and the First Nations sharing this land. Since the Liberal government has come into power you have stated that you look to a new nation-to-nation relationship.

However, there are many, many wrongs that need to be addressed before this can happen. The group Indigenous Adoptees-Ottawa has recently written to request a meeting with government officials to address the damages and potential healing from the Sixties Scoop.

This, like residential schooling, was an initiative by the government to break apart First Nations families and was a completely unacceptable practice.

I demand that you meet with these victims and address the wrongs that have ben committed.
