Urge your member of congress to stand up for older workers!

  • by: AARP
  • recipient: U.S. Congress
No American on the job or looking for work should be judged on anything other than how well they can do their job – but in a recent AARP study, nearly 2 in 3 workers said they had seen or experienced discrimination based on their age.

Right now, Congress has a chance to help change that. Employees should be judged on their skills and abilities, not their age, and a new bill would protect older workers and give them the power to fight back against unfair age discrimination. But for Congress to do the right thing, they need to know they have your support.

Take a moment and use this form to urge your members of Congress to pass this crucial bill!
Dear [name of congressperson]

As your constituent, I am counting on you to help make sure older workers are judged by their abilities -- not their age. That's why I hope you will support the bipartisan Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA).

A Supreme Court ruling has made it harder for older workers to prove age discrimination than it is to prove discrimination based on race, religion or gender. That's simply unfair, and passing this bill is crucial in making sure ALL Americans, regardless of age, are treated fairly on the job.

Older workers have been hit particularly hard in these difficult economic times. After the recession hit, many Americans 50+ have to work longer because they can't afford to retire.

This legislation would restore the legal standards that prevailed before the unfair Supreme Court decision, and help older workers remain in or reenter the workplace, without the barriers of age discrimination.

This bill is common-sense, bipartisan legislation that is essential to protecting the rights and well-being of older workers and their families, and as one of your constituents, I am counting on you to support it.
