| 5,680 | 9:45 am PDT, May 9 | Anna Borsey | United Kingdom | I AM PROFOUNDLY DISTURBED BY THE NEWS THAT ISRAEL, HOME TO SO MANY HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS, IS SERIOUSLY PROPOSING TO INCREASE THE ABUSE OF HELPLESS, INNOCENT HORSES BY PERMITTING AN EXPANSION OF HORSE RACING. This is a barbaric and cruel form of "entertainment" that has NO place in a modern, ethical society. I would like to remind you of the Torah injunction to sustain the creation and not to harm living creatures or cause suffering to same! Shalom, Chana |

| 5,677 | 1:17 pm PDT, May 7 | veronica miller | United States | Please stop horse racing. It brings with it the dark side of humanity and greed. It is no better but equal to dog racing and all the other inhumane animal "sports". There is an underground network of greed following the tracks. The killbuyers wait to sell horseflesh. We are supposed to be the more intelligent species. Why dont we show that and prevent another inhumane sport! 8 Belles raced herself to death. Many more no one cares about do the same in many racetracks in this country every day. Please show compassion and mercy and stop this insanity. This is just for greed, nothing else. |
| 5,676 | 12:25 pm PDT, May 7 | Patricia Mendiola | United States | We here in the United States want to warn you...do not expand your horse racing unless you have some very strict safeguards in place. Safeguards we do not have here. No racing before the bones are fully developed. No drugs. Safe tracks. No breeding for speed instead of endurance. No racing horses without a one month rest period. |
| 5,675 | 12:12 pm PDT, May 7 | Mrs.Jane Blythe | United States | If this cruel practise continues/increases, I shall never visit Israel again, and will not spend one bit of my money there EVER AGAIN. You are the beacon of civilization in an area bereft of humanity and sophistication - please continue as a role model. Thank you. |

| 5,673 | 10:49 am PDT, May 7 | Karen Schaffer | United States | I love horses and have always had a love/hate relationship with racing. I saw Barbaro break down during the Preakness and last year, during one of the races leading to the Preakness a horse named Mendng Fences went down. This year I was watching the Kentucky Derby and prayed all horses would make it safe. Then they announced that Eight Belles went down. I'm now over racing and see that this sport is cruel and inhumane. I hope this does not make it to Israel. I hope it stops because once it starts that's it. More horses will die needlessly. |

| 5,671 | 11:29 am PDT, May 6 | mariya smetaniuk | United States | Being that Israel's seeds are beginning to sprout regarding horse racing in its own country, I would like for those who have decision-making power in developing this industry in Israel to read the following wishes and demands we here in the United States have and want realized in regard to horse racing in the U.S.: Following Eight Belles' (and many other horses, well-known and not so well-known) breakdown and euthanasia at the Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2008, I urge you to immediately take the following steps to prevent such tragedies in the future. 1. Delay training and racing until after a horse's third birthday. Before reaching this age, the animals' legs are not fully developed, which increases the chances for injury. 2. Eliminate racing on dirt surfaces. Synthetic track surfaces - such as the surfaces used at Keeneland and all California race courses - are safer for horses and have led to dramatic decreases in breakdowns. 3. Limit the number of races per season. Even Triple Crown racers who have light schedules leading up the Derby break down under the strain. Horses who race on smaller tracks are often run so frequently that strains and breaks are inevitable. 4. Ban whipping, which is absurd. Injured horses who are mercilessly whipped by jockeys will keep going until their legs shatter completely. After all, should this sport not be FUN? It should be fun for all involved, especially for the beautiful horses, who exert so much for this sport. 5. As to administration of drugs to horses -- if you have to kill/numb the pain of a horse, this should be enough to clue you in that the horse should not be racing or working at all -- they should be resting -- horses should be fully recuperated and in tip-top shape before going out there -- the event of racing should be FUN for fall, especially for the horses -- they are the most important party. These beautiful living beings and souls are to be treated humanely and with respect as YOU would want to be treated, not only under these particular circumstances but in ALL circumstances. 6. Immediately suspend the trainer and jockey who, through excessive force and neglect, allowed this tragic death to happen -- these actions upon the horses is, in essence, criminal. There should be consequences to such brutality. What does it take for these people who are professionals and experts in their field to fully comprehend that their behavior is barbaric. Their ways must change. These changes won't stop all the cruelty of horseracing, but it is a beginning and will stop a great deal of suffering. I urge you to please consider all of the above. |

| 5,657 | 1:03 pm PDT, May 4 | Elizabeth Nadler | United States | Horse Racing is a cruel form of "entertainment". Stop the Huge Expansion of Horse Racing in Israel!
Dear Ministers Livnat, Katz, and Netanyahu,
I respectfully protest the Israeli government’s plan to bring gambling on horse racing to Israel.
Experience in the U.K. and the U.S. has shown that this industry involves enormous cruelty to animals, including breeding thousands more horses than race, the majority born to be killed.
Every aspect of a racehorse’s life involves cruelties, from beginning a harsh training regimen before their bones have hardened so that they are vulnerable to fractures from excessive weight being placed on them, to being drugged so they can be forced to race even when injured.
The injuries they sustain include bleeding in the lungs, chronic gastric ulcers, and fractured limbs. When not racing, horses are confined to a stall for up to 23 hours of the day, deprived of the herd contact and freedom of movement that would enhance their physical and mental health. Except in the case of champions who are used for breeding, when a horse can no longer race, at as young an age as four, they are killed or sold from one owner to another in a downward spiral of abuse.
For detailed information about the abuses inherent in racing, see
www.chai-online.org/racing.htm
The cost to society of gambling cannot be ignored. At least 60,000 people in England alone are gambling addicts, their families made to suffer from the loss of income, drugs, crime, and other problems that accompany addictions. In the U.S., approximately 5 ½ million adults are considered problem or pathological gamblers. At greatest risk are young people. The potential is high for the involvement of organized crime, which already exists in Israel.
Israeli law recognizes the need to prevent cruelty to animals. On that basis, we are asking the government to reconsider the establishment of the horse racing industry in Israel, which would inevitably exploit innocent animals.
Please prevent horseracing from becoming established in Israel.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
