Many states, counties and municipal governments are turning to legislation targeting specific breeds as an answer to dog attacks. While supporters of this type of provision - commonly called breed-specific legislation - argue the only way to be safe from dog bites is to eradicate "dangerous breeds" from the community, there is little to no evidence that breed-specific legislation reduces dog bites and dog attacks.
In 2008, cities in over half of the states considered some form of breed-specific legislation. In Omaha, NE pit bulls are required to have a $100,000 liability insurance policy. And some cities like Denver and Sioux City have banned pit bulls altogether.
Sadly, a bill recently failed in Illinois that would prevent insurance companies from unfairly discriminating against consumers based on the breed of dog at their residence. And now, several cities across the country are considering some form of breed-specific legislation, including Mississippi, Massachusetts, Ohio and Washington.
Breed-specific legislation does not work and we know it. Show your dedication to stopping breed-specific legislation from being implemented across the country. The more signatures we have, the stronger our voice!
We took action on “Stop Legislation Against Certain Dog Breeds”!

I am a proud Pit Bull, Rotweiller, and Husky owner my dogs are the most loveable things ever! The would not bite you unless you provoke them they would rather lick you to death or knock you over trying to play fetch! Dogs are only as good as their owners! Banning a breed only causes criminal elements to crave that breed! Discriminating against a breed of dog is the same as discriminating against a person because of their skin color, religous or sexual preferance it is stupid!

Here we go again, holocost being repeated only this time it's on dogs. What's wrong with you people, don't you realize that to pass BSL would mean that this is only the beginning. Eventually they will ban anything weighing more than 20 lbs. Do the research people, there are very few dog bites comparing to people that abuse children. Let's concentrate on the pedephiles, child labor, abusive parents first. Next thing you will see is your own rights being violated and there won't be anything you can do.

Breed Specific Legislation is wrong. There simply just isn't any other way to put it. it doesn not matter what breed the dog is, it's all up to the owner/handler to ensure that the dog is raised and socialized properly. A beagle or a poodle is just as likely to attack as a pit bull or Rottweiler is. The only difference is the amount of damage that can be inflicted. But a Golden retriever can hurt too. If you want to make sure that a dog won't attack, then control who is allowed to own and raise a dog, not what type of dog is allowed in the area. My sister has a Pit Bull and let me tell you, there isn't any dog thats less aggressive then her Bella. Not even my Beagle..

I feel as though the breeds themselves are not bad, bad owners make bad dogs. It's the same as raising children. You cannot discriminate against a certain race just because they happen to have a lot of bad people just as dogs should not be banned because of they type they are. I agree there have been a lot of dog attacks and people fear certain types of dogs pose as a hazzard in society, but I know many people who own dogs such as pitbulls who are the most loving and calm animals! Obviously if they are raised by poor owners or trained as fighting dogs than they can become dangerous but that goes for animal or person raised that way.

Until the owners are held responsible, banning any breed will be useless. Bad owners will just find another breed to abuse for their own gain. American Pit Bull Terriers are owned by many great, responsible people. I own two, and I'm responsible for my dogs, and they are well trained. Helen Keller owned a pit bull, as did Woodrow Wilson, Fred Astaire, Michael J. Fox, George Patton, Mary Tyler Moore, Humphrey Bogart, Ken Howard (his pit bull saved his life), Barbara Eden, Thomas Edison, Mel Brooks, Theodore Roosevelt, Sir Walter Scott, and Jon Stewart from the Daily Show, just to name a few. This breed can be dog aggressive, but human aggression is not tolerated by responsible owners. Banning the breed only gives the public a false sense of security. Once this breed is banned, irresponsible and bad owners will just find another breed to serve it's purpose.

Environmental influences have much to do with the temperament of animals. Many people raise "aggressive breeds" to be loving pets. Banning the breed is not sensible and unfair. Instead, a better option would be making it mandatory for new owners of these breeds to do a training course so that they can be responsible dog owners and provide the structure that these animals need.

I hope that there is some serious investigation & studies done about the belief that certain breeds are more "prone" to attacking unprovoked than others. I own to lovely pitbulls, a male & female, who have been conditioned to be around others without worry. They have had a very good upbringing and can only be described as two gigantic "wagging tongues". I have NEVER had a reason to feel that they are a danger to anyone. In fact, our boy, Nugget, LOVES our neighbors toddler. He is always playing &/or napping with him! Please reconsider this decision.

Records of dog bites used to come with stastics to prove certain breeds are aggressive is not an accurate account of proof and should not be used to determine which breeds are considered aggressive and unsafe.

My dog is a full APBT, is a registered therapy dog, passed both his Canine Good Citizen and temperament tests with flying colors. It's bad owners not bad breed so we should stop the ignorance and ban BSL!!!

If you don't train them, don't blame them. These animals only have issues because of their owners. They are what they are raised to be. But can always have a second chance. Banning animals, isnt solving the problem. Dogs are not born with a temper, they are not born with the need to fight or bite. Thats how they are raised. Stop worrying about what the dogs are doing, because you're only going to fix this by worrying about what your people are doing to these animals. No dog, no matter what the breed is just going to attack and be violent for no reason, it depends on how they are raised. So, BAN THE DEED, NOT THE BREED and guess what? IF YOU DON'T TRAIN THEM, THEN DON'T BLAME THEM!

It's like racism but with dogs.
It's like saying Blacks are violent and dangerous. It depends on the individual, not the race. As it depends on the owner, not the breed.
Honestly, I love pitbulls, rotties, Dobie's and Germans... And all other dogs people think are vicious, as well as lots of other people

i think that all dogs have problems and not just rotweilers and pit bulls, boxers etc. the dog will be a good dog if you take the time to train it to be nice get it fixed. i have a rotweiler and a boxer they are the best dogs i've ever owned and would never hurt anyone, if theres a ban is should be on abusive owners who turn there dogs savage. take the time and treat your animals well and they wont attack. people just expect big dogs or dogs that i have mentioned above to be agressive dogs, people need to change the ways they precieve animals and stop being afraid automatically.

BSL is very wrong and unfair for a number of reasons. Fisrt a dog is family, you grow together and learn to love eachother, to take that away is just wrong. Some people think it's cool to breed and train them to be vicoius. A dogs outcome is all to do about how tou train them. Don't take one GOOD breed away cause one BAD man decides he is going to make a stupid mistake. Take the man away. Montoir what dogs are going to where. Make a system, and not the kind that get rid of an animal, it's SO inhumane.

My city has a ban against pit bulls also although you can own one you are penalized through higher home insurance preiums and have to register hem through the police dept. It is unfair because many people choose to overlook these beautiful dogs. Not all are aggresive!

Aggressive dogs are not a breed. Puppies are born blank slates, like babies, and their environments and treatment determine whether or not they become aggressive. Statistics do not take into consideration the circumstances of a bite or the total number in existence of a particular breed (which could make that breed unfairly represented in dog bite statistics). Confiscating and euthanizing dogs is much more expensive than education (particularly of children) about dog bite prevention.
