In the wake of the devastating, yet avoidable, effects of Hurricane Katrina, we urge the White House to increase its efforts on preventing such a disaster from repeating itself.

There is no doubt that a large proportion of the deaths following Hurricane Katrina were preventable, and were a direct result of many factors.
For example;

How can cuts in funding for essential emergency services, to satisfy the insatiable torrent of tax reduction for the rich, be justified after potentially thousands of people are dead, especially seeing as many of them have seen no benefit at all from the tax cuts?

How can the world's self-proclaimed only superpower manage to invade and overthrow the governing regime in another country so quickly, yet spend five days before providing even the most essential of care for it's very own citizens?

How can the president possibly explain going on a fund-raising tour for his party after the hurricane has already struck, and then only manage to visit the scene when it suits him, after a vast number of people were already dead?

How can the vice president possibly explain remaining on holiday so long after the scale of the devastation became clear, when it was clear he was desperately needed?

Estimates of the number of fatalities already total over ten thousand. This means far more American citizens have died as a result of natural disaster than terrorist attacks in recent years, since the current government came to power. What, then, is the logic in draining virtually all funding from the very organisations that can prevent and contain this kind of carnage from natural disaster, and diverting it all into fighting the "war on terror", the threat of which seems to have been grossly exaggerated anyway?

We, the undersigned, not only demand an explanation from the government of the U.S.A., but strongly urge them to re-think their priorities and ethics, and concentrate on REALLY protecting their citizens. Yes, this may mean more public spending, but surely you cannot put a price on human life?
