Thank President Obama for Protecting a National Treasure

President Obama has officially withdrawn the waters of Alaska’s Bristol Bay from oil and gas development.

Bristol Bay’s waters sustain an incredible abundance of salmon and other fish as well as wildlife including millions of seabirds and waterfowl and 25 species of marine mammals. The southeast Bering Sea, with Bristol Bay at its heart, supplies over 40% of the U.S.’s seafood catch and is valued at more than $2.5 billion annually.

Thank President Obama for preventing risky offshore oil drilling in Bristol Bay, and helping to preserve the livelihoods, well-being, and age-old traditions of the region’s communities.

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for taking action to protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay from oil and gas development. Bristol Bay’s waters sustain an incredible abundance of salmon and other fish, as well as wildlife including millions of seabirds and waterfowl and 25 species of marine mammals.

The southeast Bering Sea, with Bristol Bay at its heart, supplies over 40% of the U.S.’s seafood catch and is valued at more than $2.5 billion annually. Fifty federally recognized tribes and regional tribal organizations supported permanent protection for this area, and a coalition of 20 Alaska seafood companies and trade associations also called for permanent protection.
