Smarter Energy Solutions, Not Dirty & Dangerous Drilling

Oil spills and pipeline shutdowns at Alaska's Prudhoe Bay, a year-long leak in a Gulf of Mexico oil valve damaged by Hurricane Katrina, a massive onshore spill at California's Port of Long Beach.

All of this is courtesy of the oil industry which has been making billions in record profits while clearly treating the lands and waters we've given them with complete disregard and carelessness.

The last few months have been witness to some egregious behavior on the part of Big Oil, yet industry and their allies in Congress are still pushing for legislation that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, protected waters offshore, and the fragile wildlife habitat of Teshekpuk Lake in the Western Arctic.

The oil industry has access to 95% of Alaska's North Slope, and more than 80% of all offshore oil and natural gas resources lie in areas open to drilling. We've seen the way they've treated these places, why would we let them ruin America's last few remaining wild places?

We've paid the price for Big Oil's pattern of cutting corners, negligence, and hiding leaks and spills for far too long. It's time to break our country's dangerous addiction to oil.

Sign our petition to urge Congress to table dirty and dangerous drilling proposals and move forward with cleaner, smarter energy solutions.

As an American, I do not want the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America's coasts sacrificed for oil and gas industry profits.

Unfortunately, attempts to industrialize America's fragile coasts and open the pristine Arctic Refuge to destructive oil drilling continue with renewed vigor while smart energy solutions gather dust on the shelf. But the August 2006 discovery by BP of severe pipeline corrosion on Alaska's North Slope is a reminder that oil and gas drilling is a dirty and destructive business that doesn't belong in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or off our coasts. The shutdown is stark proof that there is no such thing as 'clean,' 'safe,' or 'environmentally-gentle' oil drilling -- no matter how much Big Oil spends spinning it that way in its ads, communications and lobbying.

It's time to kick America's oil addiction and embrace smart energy solutions that promise a cheaper, smarter, cleaner and more reliable energy future. Making our cars and trucks go farther on a gallon of gas, increasing efficiency standards for homes and businesses and harnessing the power of the wind and sun mean we wouldn't have to worry about corroding pipelines and oil spills and American families would save money.

Big Oil has been raking in billions in profits but apparently not investing anything that would help it meet environmental and safety standards. Their negligence and sloppy monitoring and maintenance are more reasons to think twice when Big Oil says 'trust us.'

I urge you to oppose any efforts to open the Arctic Refuge and America's coasts to destructive drilling and to fight instead for smart energy solutions like raising fuel economy standards for our cars and trucks.

Sincerely,
