Stop the War by Reversing the Bill that Started It

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Bill Richardson for President
Congress has the power to stand up to Bush and stop the war with a decision that cannot be vetoed – and bring our troops home once and for all.

Congress authorized the War Powers Act, which allowed the invasion of Iraq. Now they can end the war by de-authorizing the Act.

This powerful, yet little-known congressional tool is a way for our leaders - and the American people - to stand up against a president who has turned stubbornness into foreign policy.

The de-authorization of the war was just introduced on the Senate floor. Governor Bill Richardson believes this is the best approach to ending the violence, and wants to take it one step further with a swift withdrawal timeline to get troops out of Iraq by the end of the year.

“I know this region well and understand how people there see the world,” Richardson said. “I even met with Saddam Hussein and secured the release of hostages. Diplomacy can work in this region – I’ve done it before – there is no military solution in Iraq.”

Urge Congress to immediately de-authorize the war in Iraq and bring the troops home!

Dear [Decision Maker]

Congress has the power to end this war. Congress authorized the invasion of Iraq under the War Powers Act and you can now de-authorize it and bring the troops home.

De-authorization can't be vetoed. And it's not up for negotiation with a President who believes mere stubbornness is a foreign policy and that he can just ignore the will of the American people.

The time has come to stand up to George Bush once and for all. Let's not wait or waver while more people die.

[Your comment here]

I urge you to immediately de-authorize the war in Iraq and bring the troops home. All of them.

Sincerely,

With an economy already in recession, it is critical that the US withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan. Invest in health care with a Single Payer Health Care plan-Medicare for All, not a patchwork plan that is being offered up by both Clinton & Obama which will reap billions for the insurance and pharmaceutical industry, and fall far short of what Americans need and deserve. Put some of the trillions of dollars being spent for the war into such areas as infrastructure, solar energy, help for the long-term unemployed, livable wages, and stopping the privatization of Social Security and Medicare.

This unconstitutional and criminal war/occupation in Iraq has been one of the longest, and most costly- to the tune of $3 trillion. A complete withdrawal from Iraq is long overdue. This wasted money ought to be redirected at instituting a Single Payer Health Care-Medicare For All plan, Solar and alternative energy sources- (not nuclear power), job creation, and implementing a decent and livable wage for all workers in the US with automatic adjustments for inflation, affordable housing, as well as regulating banks with usuary laws that were in place before the Reagan era. Ensure ballot access for third parties and independents, like Ralph Nader who will address these and other issues head-on.

I fear that the powers that be may have plans to implement a draft like they did during the Vietnam war. Upon doing a little research it can be seen that there is a definite hidden agenda behind all of this. For the sake of preserving "Liberty and Justice for all" this war needs to be stopped.

started a petition to stop extended deployments I know its a far stretch but I needed to try and do something. The war itself is ridiculous we have lost so many soldiers since the beginning of the war in 2003 and the number continues to get higher and the end is nowhere in sight anytime soon regardless what the presidential candidates say. i have excepted the fact that we will not be pulling out because we are in too deep however something can still be done the length of time that a soldier is over there is just too long 12-18 months away from family, friends, and loved ones instead of them being gone that long I think the government should make it 6 month rotations shortening the length of time that a soldier is over there will help boost morale, ease the strain on the soldiers and their families and possibly help decrease the divorce rate in the military which is crazy high.. I have talked to some service members and they agree they know they have to go where they are told but would rather go 6 months then for 1 1/2 years but they also know that they have no say.. Please help me be the voice of the military and sign this petition and forward it on to others. Don't let your views on the war or the president stop you from supporting our troops.. just click the link or copy and paste the link http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-extended-deployments Thank you

My cousin passed away a few months ago. He had signed up with the army right after 9/11. He served 2 tours in Iraq. When he came home he sought treatment for post traumatic stress disorder. The VA was no help - only perscribing sleep meds....which caused his death. Please prevent our men and women in uniform of suffering the effects of war. Save the US before saving the world.

President Bush lied to the American people about reasons for invading and bombing Iraq in total violation of the U.N. treaty we ratified and which is now part of our Constitution. We, the American people, now require you to do Two things. First, deauthorize the Iraq invasion and, second, impeach and convict President Bush and V. Pres. Dick Cheney.

This is a war with no clear enemy. This war was hastily started by a controversial event which begs to be re-investigated. It has put us on a slippery slope, and allowed the president power to steal away many of our rights. This makes us ALL wonder what the Bush administrations true motivation for this war actually is. It needs to end, now.

I never thought that I would see the day my country would become a "war monger"...but here we are, bankrupting our economy while slaughtering nations all because we are too lazy to develop an alternate source of fuel. I guess Yankee ingenuity is dead-buried under Chevron & Exxon corporate headquarters.
