Stop the War by Reversing the Bill that Started It

  • recipient: U.S. Congress
Congress has the power to stand up to Bush and stop the war with a decision that cannot be vetoed – and bring our troops home once and for all.

Congress authorized the War Powers Act, which allowed the invasion of Iraq. Now they can end the war by de-authorizing the Act.

This powerful, yet little-known congressional tool is a way for our leaders - and the American people - to stand up against a president who has turned stubbornness into foreign policy.

The de-authorization of the war was just introduced on the Senate floor. Governor Bill Richardson believes this is the best approach to ending the violence, and wants to take it one step further with a swift withdrawal timeline to get troops out of Iraq by the end of the year.

"I know this region well and understand how people there see the world," Richardson said. "I even met with Saddam Hussein and secured the release of hostages. Diplomacy can work in this region – I've done it before – there is no military solution in Iraq."

Urge Congress to immediately de-authorize the war in Iraq and bring the troops home!

Dear [Decision Maker] Congress has the power to end this war. Congress authorized the invasion of Iraq under the War Powers Act and you can now de-authorize it and bring the troops home. De-authorization can't be vetoed. And it's not up for negotiation with a President who believes mere stubbornness is a foreign policy and that he can just ignore the will of the American people. The time has come to stand up to George Bush once and for all. Let's not wait or waver while more people die. [Your comment here] I urge you to immediately de-authorize the war in Iraq and bring the troops home. All of them. Sincerely, [Your name] [Your address]
