Urge Congress to Help Save Great Cats and Rare Canids!

Target: Your representative; Your senators
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Lions, leopards, jaguars, wolves - these magnificent and iconic species face numerous threats, including poaching, poisoning and habitat destruction. Around the world, our great carnivore populations are declining dramatically – and they need our help.

Conservation-minded members of Congress have just reintroduced legislation to help protect great cats and canids around the world. The Great Cats and Rare Canids Act of 2007 would assist in the conservation of rare cat and canine populations outside the United States. This legislation covers 13 species of felids and canids, from the endangered Snow Leopard of Central Asia to the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf.

This legislation is modeled after the highly successful Multinational Species Conservation Funds (MSCF), which provide critical funding for species such as tigers, elephants, and rhinos. The Great Cats and Rare Canids Act would create an additional fund to augment the MSCF, thus expanding the United States' global conservation work to include conservation of imperiled cats and canids.

I am writing to urge you to support the Great Cats and Rare Canids Act of 2007 to save the great cats and rare canids of the world.

Like many of your other constituents, I care about protecting rare species like clouded leopards, jaguars, snow leopards and African wild dogs so future generations will one day be able to enjoy them. This legislation in the House (H.R. 1464) -- sponsored by Reps. Mark Udall, Harold Rogers, Ed Royce, John Tanner and others -- and in the Senate (S. 1033) -- sponsored by Sens. Joseph Lieberman, Sam Brownback and Barbara Boxer -- will do just that.

Let us stop being self absorbed, and consider the plight of the natural world and it's creatures. We are not really separate from it and what we do to them we do to ourselves also, if not in the short run then certainly in the long run as we are now seeing. The jaguar is one of the most majestic creatures on our soil, and a powerful symbol of beauty and freedom. How horrible a world will this be if we are all that remains (if even we) and the incredible diversity of Gods creation is gone? We are clever monkeys, but not wise.
